WYANDOTTE, Mich.<\/strong> \u2013 Wilson Middle School will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025, as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of illness in the Wyandotte Public Schools community.<\/p>\n

Superintendent James Anderson notified the community on Tuesday (Nov. 18) after several students reported feeling unwell around lunchtime. <\/p>\n

Although an initial investigation considered a possible food-related cause, the Health Department advised that the illness is likely an outbreak of Norovirus.<\/p>\n

The closure will allow maintenance staff to thoroughly disinfect the entire building.<\/p>\n

In addition, the district has removed the scheduled turkey entree from the menu at elementary and high schools this week. <\/p>\n

Replacement items are being secured and will be finalized soon. <\/p>\n

Families are asked to plan accordingly.<\/p>\n

Norovirus is a common cause of gastroenteritis and is easily spread through contaminated food, person-to-person contact, or surfaces. <\/p>\n

It is sometimes called the \u201cstomach flu\u201d but is unrelated to influenza, which affects the respiratory system.<\/p>\n

Symptoms of norovirus include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, which often last one to two days. <\/p>\n

Most people recover without medical attention, but severe cases can lead to dehydration, especially in young children and the elderly.<\/p>\n

Students and staff with symptoms should stay home until 48 hours after symptoms stop. <\/p>\n

Frequent handwashing with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds is the best way to prevent the spread. <\/p>\n

Those who have been sick should avoid preparing food for others for at least three days after recovery.<\/p>\n

Most household cleaners do not kill norovirus; bleach is the only reliable disinfectant. <\/p>\n

The Health Department\u2019s cleaning and disinfection guidelines are attached for reference.<\/p>\n

Superintendent Anderson thanked the Health Department for its quick response and emphasized the district\u2019s commitment to containing the illness and keeping the community healthy.<\/p>\n
