{"id":389025,"date":"2025-11-19T03:34:22","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T03:34:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/389025\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T03:34:22","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T03:34:22","slug":"thanksgiving-food-drive-to-serve-over-4500-families-at-southside-fort-worth-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/389025\/","title":{"rendered":"Thanksgiving food drive to serve over 4,500 families at Southside Fort Worth church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every year, cars wrap around the \u201clittle church doing big things for God\u201d for its annual Thanksgiving food giveaway.<\/p>\n<p>True Love Sanctuary Christ Holy Sanctified Church, located off Yuma Avenue in the Hillside neighborhood, fills neighborhood residents and other recipients\u2019 trunks with turkeys, sweet potatoes, onions, cabbage and green beans. The annual tradition is expected to continue on Nov. 22 until there\u2019s no food left.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s holiday meal distribution comes after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/11\/10\/us\/trump-government-shutdown-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">longest government shutdown<\/a> in U.S. history that saw a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/11\/13\/texas-snap-benefits-restored-government-shutdown-usda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">now-ended<\/a> pause on food stamp benefits and an <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/11\/07\/tarrant-food-bank-doubles-food-distribution-because-of-snap-pause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased demand<\/a> on local food banks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in two decades, Bishop Michael E. Williams, the church\u2019s founder, said the congregation is in need of additional donations to address the larger-than-normal need. He told the Fort Worth Report he expects the church to feed over 4,500 families this year.<\/p>\n<p>Donations are critical to address the \u201cgreat need,\u201d said Williams, who founded the church in 2001.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust imagine how many more people are going to be coming because of the need. And so we anticipate a great crowd, but we anticipate that God is going to bless us to do exactly what we need to do,\u201d Williams said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The church partners with Tarrant Area Food Bank, along with other nonprofits and churches, to serve thousands of families in need. Congregants bought what they could to create 100 free baskets filled with the basics, including a small turkey and sides such as green beans and corn.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A holiday meal for 10 is estimated to cost about $80 in 2025, according to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellsfargo.com\/com\/insights\/agri-food-intelligence\/thanksgiving-food-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wells Fargo<\/a> analysis of the Thanksgiving feast. The same study said the feast costs about 2% to 3% less compared to last year.<\/p>\n<p>A different analysis by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fb.org\/news-release\/cost-of-thanksgiving-dinner-declines-remains-higher-than-pre-pandemic-levels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Farm Bureau Federation<\/a> found the 10-person dinner was estimated to cost $58.08 in 2024, which is less than the previous two Thanksgivings but still more than pre-pandemic prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t control the government. (Marissa Greene | Fort Worth Report)<\/p>\n<p>Last May, the church sustained <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2024\/08\/07\/after-devastating-fire-fort-worth-faith-community-helps-restore-southside-church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heavy fire and water damage<\/a> after a downed powerline landed on the metal roof and ignited an attic fire. Several members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, faith-based nonprofits and city officials banded together to help restore True Love Sanctuary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spencer Smith bonded with Williams as Smith volunteered in the rebuilding and during last year\u2019s Thanksgiving giveaway.<\/p>\n<p>Smith, along with 40 other members from the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he is an interfaith outreach specialist, plans to volunteer in giving food away at Williams\u2019 church again this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a no-brainer that we would help out again with the Thanksgiving giveaway because we have this friendship established,\u201d Smith said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even though the church is in a \u201cdire mode\u201d to have enough food to feed the incoming families, Williams said he continues to have faith that the church will help people in need.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are, once again, going by faith, believing that everything\u2019s going to happen that we need to happen,\u201d Williams said. \u201cWe\u2019re working as hard as ever to make things happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marissa Greene is a Report for America corps member, covering faith for the Fort Worth Report.
