{"id":389045,"date":"2025-11-19T03:44:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T03:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/389045\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T03:44:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T03:44:11","slug":"deis-shifting-future-in-philadelphia-under-new-executive-order","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/389045\/","title":{"rendered":"DEI\u2019s shifting future in Philadelphia under new executive order"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/series\/cherelle-parker-philly-100th-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayor Cherelle Parker<\/a> signed a new order Tuesday that reworks the city\u2019s\u00a0 contracting and procurement policies after <a href=\"https:\/\/aflegal.org\/press-release\/victory-city-of-philadelphia-agrees-to-eliminate-race-and-sex-based-quotas-in-landmark-settlement-related-to-project-labor-agreements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">settling a lawsuit that challenged the city\u2019s guidelines<\/a> for diversity, equity and inclusion.\n<\/p>\n<p>The updated order is designed to remove legal risk from the city\u2019s \u201caspirational goals\u201d for diversity in the city\u2019s procurement and contracting processes.\n<\/p>\n<p>City Solicitor Renee Garcia said after evaluating court decisions, the city had to develop a new way to make sure diversity and inclusion were part of city contracts.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the way forward,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is how we are going to have a better program. We are going to be legally compliant, we\u2019re going to do it on our terms and we are going to realize the mayor\u2019s vision of economic opportunity for all.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Nadir Jones, director of the Office of Business Impact and Economic Advancement, said that instead of using phases such as \u201cminority-owned,\u201d they will change their language to support small and local businesses.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to set narrowly tailored ranges and targets for city procurement based on small and local business availability,\u201d Jones said. \u201cWe will establish bid preferences for local businesses.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Jones added that the city is not abandoning the businesses that have received work from the city, just rewriting the regulations.
