{"id":389341,"date":"2025-11-19T06:41:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T06:41:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/389341\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T06:41:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T06:41:12","slug":"curacao-become-smallest-ever-nation-to-qualify-for-world-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/389341\/","title":{"rendered":"Curacao become smallest-ever nation to qualify for World Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nov 18, 2025, 10:15 PM ET<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team\/_\/id\/11678\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Curacao<\/a> have become the smallest ever country to qualify for a World Cup finals after hanging on for a 0-0 draw against Jamaica on the last day of Concacaf qualfiying.<\/p>\n<p><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"33e402f9-5298-59a9-7bcb-8e31e3eda3c3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=2659\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Panama<\/a> and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"66789dc9-a09d-5ee7-ac6a-dca73c3ed88d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=2654\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haiti<\/a> also booked their spots in a tense final round of qualifying for the region that is also home to host nations and automatic qualifiers the United States, Mexico and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The tiny island nation, located in the Caribbean, boasts a population of just 156,115 people and a land mass of just 444 square kilometers. Cura\u00e7ao finished as the only undefeated nation in the tournament and finished atop of Group B with 12 points.<\/p>\n<p>They surpassed Iceland&#8217;s record when they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/football\/story\/_\/id\/37535359\/iceland-eclipse-trinidad-tobago-record\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">qualified in 2018<\/a> with a population of just over 350,000.<\/p>\n<p>Curacao, managed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/football\/story\/_\/id\/46967790\/how-curacao-become-smallest-ever-country-qualify-world-cup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">former Premier League boss<\/a> Dick Advocaat, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/football\/story\/_\/id\/46996735\/world-cup-curacao-blow-ex-premier-league-boss-dick-advocaat-misses-key-game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">missed the match against Jamaica<\/a> for personal reasons, went their entire qualification campaign unbeaten, recording a mammoth 7-0 win over Bermuda on their way to securing their place at the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Advocaat was at the helm of the Netherlands national team for three stints and managed South Korea, Belgium and Russia before taking the job with Curacao.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/football\/story?_slug_=how-curacao-become-smallest-ever-country-qualify-world-cup&amp;id=46967790\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallest-ever nation led to World Cup spot by ex-Premier League manager<\/a><br \/>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/football\/story?_slug_=2026-world-cup-how-nations-world-qualify&amp;id=40297462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2026 World Cup: Who has qualified, and how the rest can make it<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Curacao will find out their group stage opponents for a historic first World Cup appearance when the draw is made on Dec. 5 at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Panama advanced to its second World Cup after defeating El Salvador 3-0 on first-half goals from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/260346\/C\u00e9sar-Blackman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cesar Blackman<\/a> and Erick Davis. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/238763\/Jos\u00e9-Luis-Rodr\u00edguez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jose Luis Rodriguez<\/a> added a goal for the Panamanians, who have Russia 2018 as their only World Cup appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Panama finished as the best team in Group A with 12 points while Suriname, which came into the last round leading the way on goal difference, lost 3-1 against Guatemala and finished in second place with nine points.<\/p>\n<p>Haiti had a surprising campaign winning Group C over favorites Honduras and Costa Rica after beating Nicaragua 2-1. The results from Group C mean both Honduras and Costa Rica won&#8217;t be involved in the next summer&#8217;s tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Loicious Deedson opened the scoring in the ninth minute and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/307861\/Ruben-Providence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruben Providence<\/a> added a goal in the 45th.
