In the 30 years since the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/reviews\/toy-story-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Toy Story<\/a>, the entire state of play has changed \u2013 and the toy landscape is a much more tech-heavy place. So when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/news\/toy-story-5-trailer-woody-and-the-gang-face-tablet-terror-as-pixar-introduces-greta-lees-lilypad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Toy Story 5<\/a> arrives in 2026, six years after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/reviews\/toy-story-4-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Toy Story 4<\/a>, it has much to say \u2013 about toys, technology, and what childhood means in the 2020s. And, as director Andrew Stanton \u2013 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/features\/every-pixar-movie-ranked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pixar<\/a> legend, behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/reviews\/finding-nemo-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Finding Nemo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/reviews\/wall-e-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wall-E<\/a>, here making his first Toy Story \u2013 tells Empire, it\u2019s a nuanced conversation, simply trying to reflect where we are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, it\u2019s not even really about a battle so much as the realisation of an existential problem: that nobody\u2019s really playing with toys anymore,\u201d Stanton explains. \u201cTechnology has changed everybody\u2019s lives, but we\u2019re asking what that means for us \u2014 and to our kids. We can\u2019t just get away with making tech the villain.\u201d While the notion of screentime is embodied by incoming frog-tablet antagonist Lilypad, the original toys are back too \u2013 not just Woody and Buzz, but an entire army of Buzzes. Together they\u2019re known as the Multi-Buzz, set to cause chaos as they all come to realise the true nature of their plastic existence.<\/p>\n<p>While the original Toy Story trilogy came to a hugely acclaimed conclusion in 2010\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/reviews\/toy-story-3-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Toy Story 3<\/a>, the evolving nature of childhood means there\u2019s more to explore with these characters as the years go on. \u201cSo 3 was the end&#8230; of the Andy years,\u201d says Stanton. \u201cNobody\u2019s being robbed of their trilogy. They can have that and never watch another if they don\u2019t want to. But I\u2019ve always loved how this world allows us to embrace time and change.
