Michigan had 17 hospitals awarded an \u201cA\u201d grade for patient safety this fall. <\/p>\n
The Metro Detroit area had six of the safest hospitals in the state, but also three of the worst hospitals in the nation, according to the latest The Leapfrog Group safety grades. <\/p>\n
Northern Michigan had five top-notch facilities, while other strong grades were spread from Zeeland and Mount Pleasant to Jackson and Chelsea. <\/p>\n
Of the remaining hospitals across the state, 33 got a \u201cB,\u201d 22 got a \u201cC,\u201d four got a \u201cD,\u201d and three got an \u201cF.\u201d <\/p>\n

(Leapfrog does not grade Veteran\u2019s Affairs hospitals, critical access hospitals, specialty hospitals, children\u2019s hospitals, or rural emergency hospitals)<\/p>\n
Five Michigan hospitals have received at least five consecutive \u201cA\u201d grades. They were Corewell Health Zeeland Hospital, Garden City Hospital, Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, Munson Healthcare Cadillac Hospital, and Trinity Health Livingston in Howell. <\/p>\n
Since earning a \u201cC\u201d in spring 2024, McLaren Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant has posted three consecutive \u201cA\u201d grades. Similarly, Chelsea Hospital and Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord each made a jump from a \u201cC\u201d this spring to an \u201cA\u201d this fall. <\/p>\n
Nationally, about 13% of hospitals received the \u201cStraight A\u201d designation this year. About 32% of U.S. hospitals got an \u201cA,\u201d while 26% got a \u201cB,\u201d 33% got a \u201cC,\u201d 8% got a \u201cD,\u201d and 1% got an \u201cF.\u201d<\/p>\n
Leapfrog\u2019s goal in publishing its safety grades is to help patients make informed decisions about which hospital to visit for their care needs, and to push hospitals to higher levels of safety and care.<\/p>\n
Grades incorporate data the hospitals themselves report to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, as well as a comparison to national averages, and the results of a voluntary Leapfrog survey.<\/p>\n
