A detective who tracked down a car similar to one owned by Toyah Cordingley’s alleged killer, Rajwinder Singh, has told a court how he narrowed his search.<\/p>\n

Mr Singh is on trial in the Supreme Court in Cairns and has pleaded not guilty to murdering the 24-year-old woman, whose body was found on Wangetti Beach, north of Cairns, in October 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The court has previously heard how police compared Ms Cordingley’s phone records, and the cell towers it pinged, with CCTV vision of cars driving south towards Cairns on the afternoon she is presumed to have been killed.<\/p>\n

Detective Sergeant Matt Mattock told the court on Wednesday that police initially identified 219 cars that could have possibly matched three “phone events” on Ms Cordingley’s device.<\/p>\n

He said police had used what was known as “timing advance” data, which gave a distance from Ms Cordingley’s phone to local cell towers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

University of New South Wales telecommunications professor Aruna Seneviratne previously told the court that “timing advance” was the concept of measuring the distance of a mobile phone from a cell tower based on the time it takes for a signal to return to the tower from the device.<\/p>\n

Professor Seneviratne said timing advance was “fundamental” to the operation of a mobile phone network, and that its “accuracy [was] absolutely necessary”.<\/p>\n
