{"id":390828,"date":"2025-11-19T22:06:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T22:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/390828\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T22:06:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T22:06:14","slug":"tea-extends-fwisd-board-of-managers-application-deadline-after-surge-of-applicants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/390828\/","title":{"rendered":"TEA extends FWISD board of managers application deadline after surge of applicants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An influx of interest for the soon-to-be appointed <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/10\/27\/heres-what-parents-need-to-know-about-the-state-takeover-of-fort-worth-isd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">board of managers<\/a> for Fort Worth ISD pushed the Texas Education Agency to extend its application deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Those seeking to serve on the board now have until 11:59 p.m. Dec. 1 <a href=\"https:\/\/tea.texas.gov\/texas-schools\/school-boards\/school-governance\/board-of-managers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to submit an application<\/a>, TEA spokesperson Jake Kobersky said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The agency has received more than 180 applications with another 800 in progress. Of the completed applications, 140 candidates live within the district.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis overwhelming response demonstrates the community\u2019s commitment to supporting the district\u2019s students and their local schools,\u201d Kobersky said. \u201cTEA will thoroughly review each application and encourages anyone with a desire to serve and the belief that all students can learn to apply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Education Commissioner Mike Morath will appoint managers in the spring to replace FWISD\u2019s nine locally elected trustees as part of the state taking control of the 67,500-student district. Managers will have the same powers and duties as the current trustees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>State law does not require managers to reside within a public school district\u2019s boundaries, but Morath previously <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/11\/13\/teachers-question-future-as-texas-takeover-of-fwisd-advances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appointed managers who represent the local community<\/a> in other interventions, TEA officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/10\/23\/texas-takes-control-of-fwisd-in-states-second-largest-public-school-intervention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Texas intervened in FWISD on Oct. 23<\/a> after a now-closed school received five straight F\u2019s under the state\u2019s academic accountability ratings that are largely based on STAAR results.<\/p>\n<p>Trustees are <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/11\/18\/trustees-fighting-fwisd-takeover-cite-need-for-deeper-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fighting back on the takeover<\/a> by appealing the commissioner\u2019s decision. Board President Roxanne Martinez said Nov. 18 that the appeal allows for a deeper review of the intervention.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/11\/06\/texas-appoints-fwisd-conservator-to-oversee-transition-to-state-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Morath tapped Christopher Ruszkowski<\/a>, a former New Mexico secretary of education, to monitor district operations as FWISD\u2019s conservator during the transition to state control.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jacob Sanchez is education editor for the Fort Worth Report.
