The photo is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2025\/07\/15\/state\/state-environment\/underwater-photo-of-great-white-shark-in-maine-waters-believed-to-be-1st\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">believed to be the first underwater image <\/a>of a great white shark off the coast of Maine, according to the magazine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/natgeo.com\/photos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"873\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/CV-1225_1870945817_View_SnNB-11-600x873.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3614501\"  \/><\/a>National Geographic 2025 Pictures of the Year edition. Steve Crawford, a fish ecologist at the University of Guelph in Ontario, believes that there is a healthy population of the animals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2024\/08\/31\/down-east\/downeast-environment\/maine-passamaquoddy-bay-great-white-sharks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">breeding in Passamaquoddy Bay.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s rare to spot them, and even rarer to get a picture of the sharks in Maine waters.
