Average health insurance premiums on Vermont Health Connect are projected to more than double, the highest rate increases countrywide.

This is a disaster foretold. Democrats in Congress have warned for months that unless pandemic-era health insurance subsidies were extended, the 24 million Americans who get their health insurance through ACA marketplaces would see astronomical price hikes. Yet, despite a 43 day government shutdown, Republicans in Congress and President Trump refused to extend subsidies.

The price tag for inaction has just arrived.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1200" height="900" src="https://www.europesays.com/us/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/welch-health-presser-1-20251031-1200x900.jpg" class="attachment-newspack-article-block-landscape-large size-newspack-article-block-landscape-large wp-post-image" alt="On Vermont Health Connect, annual premium prices have doubled, or more" data-hero-candidate="1" data-attachment-id="634671" data-permalink="https://vtdigger.org/welch-health-presser-1-20251031/" data-orig-file="https://vtdigger.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/welch-health-presser-1-20251031.jpg" data-orig-size="2500,1663" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"1.8","credit":"Glenn Russell","camera":"NIKON Z 6_2","caption":"U.S. Sen. After factoring in a $15,000 annual deductible, she said that in case of a serious medical event, her family will pay $47,000 before their insurance kicks in.

Bronz feels she has no choice.
