{"id":392041,"date":"2025-11-20T10:52:32","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T10:52:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/392041\/"},"modified":"2025-11-20T10:52:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T10:52:32","slug":"supermodel-kathy-ireland-launches-commercial-fishing-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/392041\/","title":{"rendered":"Supermodel Kathy Ireland launches commercial fishing career"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kathy Ireland is embarking on a new business venture as she dives into the world of commercial fishing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In July, the 62-year-old supermodel and businesswoman announced that she had obtained her open-ocean commercial fishing license from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and would be working as a crew member on the 4th Watch, a vessel captained by her husband, former emergency room physician Dr.\u00a0Greg Olsen.<\/p>\n<p>During an interview with Fox News Digital, the Sports Illustrated cover model explained that she had discovered her passion for her new occupation through Olsen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty wonderful,\u201d Ireland said of becoming a commercial fisherman. \u201cI\u2019m so grateful for the opportunities that I have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up camping and fishing,\u201d she continued. \u201cMy husband, he\u2019s been fishing since he was 3 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ireland told Fox News Digital that Olsen spent 40 years as an ER doctor before recently retiring, and for the past two decades, he has balanced both his careers in medicine and commercial fishing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to go out with him on the boat,\u201d she said. \u201cThis season, an opportunity opened up. And when the calendar allows, I go out there with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her Instagram post, Ireland clarified that she would not be giving up her \u201cday job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kathy Ireland announced that she had obtained her open-ocean commercial fishing license from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and would be working as a crew member on the 4th Watch. In 2021, kiWW generated $3.1 billion in retail sales, according to Forbes.<\/p>\n<p>While speaking with Fox News Digital, Ireland drew parallels between\u00a0her business career\u00a0and working on a commercial fishing boat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lessons I\u2019m learning from being out at sea are amazing,\u201d the California native said. \u201cThey\u2019re powerful. Much of it aligns with business. And being out there in truly God\u2019s country where we\u2019re just surrounded by just the wide open sea \u2014 it\u2019s beautiful. It\u2019s hard work, but I have a renewed appreciation for what my husband and so many others do. I knew it was hard work. And the work that goes into it, the precision, is absolutely excellent.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first few days, I was struggling, as typically first mate or crew works the rails while the captain is driving,\u201d she explained. \u201cAnd working the rails, you\u2019re pulling up the traps when you identify your buoy, you\u2019re pulling up the trap, you\u2019re scraping off the kelp and then you\u2019re rolling it onto the rails. And it was so heavy and it was so hard. I mean, everything on my body, it was hurting and I recognized it\u2019s like, \u2018Wait a minute.\u2019 It\u2019s with many other sports and elements of life in business. When you make a minor adjustment, a lot of things don\u2019t need to be as difficult as they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ireland explained that her time at sea gave her a new perspective, drawing a wry comparison between the challenges of nature and those of the boardroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no fear of sharks, yet I have to say I much prefer the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/science\/wild-nature\/sharks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sharks in the ocean<\/a>\u00a0than I do those in business,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ll deal with those, but the ones in the sea, I love those ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ireland is the CEO, founder and chief designer of her global lifestyle Kathy Ireland Brands, which licenses products and services including fashion, home decor, furniture, health and wellness and business solutions. While speaking with Fox News Digital, she highlighted additional similarities between commercial fishing and business leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got to be able to pivot,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to be alert and focused. And you\u2019ve got to be able to take in the elements, everything that\u2019s hitting you at once, and you have to act decisively and focus. So when the weather stirs up quickly and suddenly you\u2019ve gotta change course quickly and you\u2019ve gotta get a good course. And that\u2019s been a powerful lesson.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ireland went on to describe the hands-on nature of her training, which covers emergency procedures including actions to take if the boat sinks, how to locate and use the EPIRB (emergency beacon), alert the Coast Guard and\u00a0navigate the vessel\u00a0if her husband goes overboard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t just do this as a passive passenger,\u201d Ireland said. \u201cWhen I\u2019m out there with them, I take it very seriously and I recognize the responsibility that\u2019s involved.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kathy Ireland attends the Los Angeles Urban League\u2019s Whitney M Young Jr. Awards Dinner on May 18, 2023 in Beverly Hills, California. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Ireland also reflected on how her experiences in modeling and commercial fishing share a similar work ethic and intensity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking with [Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue founding editor] Julie Campbell, with SI, we were up when the moon was out, and we\u2019d finish when the moon was out,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s how commercial fishing is. But with commercial fishing, we don\u2019t stop. There\u2019s so much to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olsen owns the commercial fishing operation 4th Watch Seafood, which is based out of\u00a0Santa Barbara Harbor, California. <\/p>\n<p>While speaking with Fox News Digital, Ireland described how she has gained further appreciation for Olsen since working with him at his company and on his ship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so proud of him,\u201d she said. \u201cHe took a passion of his, and he turned it into a lucrative business that serves people in a really powerful way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething about his business and my business that I\u2019m learning is we have a lot of similarities,\u201d Ireland continued. \u201cHard work. We love what we do. We love serving people and giving them the absolute best product.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ireland also reflected on how her experiences in modeling and commercial fishing share a similar work ethic and intensity. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Ireland and Olsen have been married since 1988 and share son Erik and daughters Lily and Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>The model\u00a0noted that joining Olsen\u2019s crew marked the first time that the pair have worked together and shed some light on their dynamic at sea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was wondering what that was going to be like,\u201d she said. \u201cBut it\u2019s actually really good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continued, \u201cHe\u2019s a great leader. And we\u2019re both very independent people. So I wondered like, \u2018OK, how is that going to work?\u2019 But I\u2019ve watched him navigate this and he\u2019s done so much in his life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ireland explained that being part of a commercial fishing crew involves long days that start before dawn, chopping bait under moonlight and continuing into the heat of the day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She said that she and Olsen have developed a rhythm while working as a team to haul traps, measure lobsters and reset the bait.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s this beautiful synchronicity,\u201d Ireland said. \u201cSometimes, when we get it right, and I\u2019m learning, but when it goes well, it feels like a dance almost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cBut in addition to just full days out there, afterwards, we\u2019re swabbing the decks,\u201d she continued. \u201cWe\u2019re cleaning out the bait jars.
