In May 2024, Netflix announced the sequel<\/a> to the 1996 sports comedy \u201cHappy Gilmore,\u201d starring Adam Sandler \u2014 but Julie Bowen figured her role as Virginia Venit, Happy\u2019s love interest, had long since been retired to the clubhouse.<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard it was happening and I thought, \u2018Well, I won\u2019t be in it,\u2019\u201d Bowen confessed to The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She admitted she wasn\u2019t bitter about potentially being passed over. After all, it has been 30 years since the original teed off.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s got a hottie. He\u2019s got some little bitty on the side,\u201d she joked, acknowledging Hollywood\u2019s tendency to swap out veterans for younger talent. <\/p>\n

When the news of the sequel became public, it was Bowen\u2019s kids who alerted her to the news before she was \u201cofficially\u201d asked to reprise her role.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy now-18-year-old said, \u2018Mom I hear they\u2019re doing a sequel and he\u2019s with Sydney Sweeney as a cart girl,\u2019\u201d she recalled. <\/p>\n

Though \u201cEuphoria\u201d star Sweeney isn\u2019t part of the project, Bowen admitted that the thought \u201churt,\u201d but she noted that she would have respected the choice. <\/p>\n

But Bowen got the news she didn\u2019t see coming.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I got the call that I was actually in it, I was like, \u2018Are you sure? Come on!\u2019\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

In October, Bowen appeared on the daytime talk show \u201cSherri,\u201d<\/a> hosted by Sherri Shepherd, where she expressed her affection for working with Sandler \u2014 and shared that producers plan to \u201cde-age\u201d her for the role, a process she said she was curious to see in action. <\/p>\n
