(Photo courtesy of Wikipedia\/public domain)<\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 20,\u202f1864, William\u202f\u201cBill\u201d\u202fKettner was born in Ann Arbor, Mich., home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Michigan<\/a> (Go Blue!) In his later years, he would become a driving force behind San Diego\u2019s transformation into a major naval city.<\/p>\n<p>Kettner moved to San Diego in the late 1880s, built a business career in insurance and real estate, and became an active civic leader.\u202fIn 1912, he was elected U.S. Representative for California\u2019s 11th District and served four terms from 1913 to 1921.\u202fWhile in Congress, he utilized his committee assignments on Rivers &amp; Harbors and Naval Affairs to secure federal funding for critical naval infrastructure in San Diego, including harbor dredging, a fuel station on Point Loma, radio stations, and major base expansions.\u202f<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timesofsandiego.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/63014-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/63014.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-355903\"  \/><\/a>William Kettner, seated in a very early automobile identified as a Pierce Motorette in 1907 at Visalia,  CA. In 1919, the San Diego Fire Department commissioned its first gasoline-powered fireboat and named it Bill\u202fKettner in his honor.\u202f And in 1930, shortly after his death, Arctic Street was officially renamed Kettner Boulevard, commemorating his contributions to the city\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n<p>Through his political acumen and unwavering commitment to San Diego,  Kettner played a pivotal role in shaping the city\u2019s maritime and military future.
