Legendary New York Post columnist Keith J. Kelly \u2014 who was renowned for his must-read coverage of the once-high-flying magazine industry in his Media Ink column \u2014 was inducted into the Deadline Club New York Journalism Hall of Fame at the Harvard Club in New York City on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Kelly \u2014 who spent 23 years at The Post <\/a>chronicling the twists and turns of the magazine world and the haughty, designer-clad overlords who ran it \u2014 was introduced by former publisher and CEO of The Post Jesse Angelo, who marveled at the power the scribe wielded over the kingdom of Cond\u00e9 Nast.<\/p>\n Keith J. Kelly, longtime media columnist for The Post, was inducted into the Deadline Club New York Journalism Hall of Fame. Alexandra Steigrad<\/p>\n Angelo described watching Kelly in action after putting a call into one of Cond\u00e9 Nast\u2019s boldfaced top editors, which included The New Yorker\u2019s Tina Brown, Vogue\u2019s Anna Wintour and Vanity Fair\u2019s Graydon Carter.<\/p>\n \u201cHe would call the office of one of the aforementioned big shots and in his famous gravel-inflected voice say: \u2018Uh, Keith Kelly here, is he available?\u2019 A message would be taken by a secretary, and Keith and I would then sit back and joke about how long it would take for them to call back. Usually sub five minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n Tina Brown, who edited Vanity Fair and The New Yorker among others, described the \u201cdread\u201d she felt when Kelly called her office. Alexandra Steigrad<\/p>\n Brown, who was also being inducted into the Hall of Fame, echoed Angelo\u2019s remarks, saying she always took Kelly\u2019s call even though she \u201cused to dread it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI did everything I could to avoid those calls,\u201d Brown recounted. \u201cI had to listen, though, because he always knew what was happening at Cond\u00e9 Nast before anyone who worked there. I had to know, am I fired? Who just got stolen from my staff?\u201d<\/p>\n Longtime WNBC anchor Chuck Scarborough was also inducted into the Deadline Club Hall of Fame. Alexandra Steigrad<\/p>\n Kelly, who left The Post in 2021 only to re-emerge as editor in chief of four Strauss Media-owned local New York newspapers a year later, called his time covering media \u201cone of the most enjoyable runs ever.\u201d<\/p>\n Ever the reporter, he said he was looking forward to covering the city under a new mayor.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s going to be wild here in New York,\u201d Kelly said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to have a blast and I\u2019m happy to be there watching every step of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n Also inducted into the Hall of Fame were \u201c60 Minutes\u201d correspondent Bill Whitaker<\/a>, \u201cCBS Sunday Morning\u201d correspondent Martha Teichner, WNBC anchor Chuck Scarborough<\/a> and WCBS Newsradio reporter Rich Lamb.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Legendary New York Post columnist Keith J.
