As families prepare for Thanksgiving, organizers in Independence Heights say the need this year is greater than they\u2019ve seen in a long time. <\/p>\n
On Saturday, a steady stream of cars stretched through the neighborhood as volunteers worked to make sure no one went without a holiday meal.<\/p>\n
The line began forming early, with families waiting patiently for boxes filled with food and Thanksgiving staples \u2014 a sign, organizers say, of how deep the need runs.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve always been a food desert here in Independence Heights,\u201d said community leader Mardie Paige. \u201cBecause we are a food desert, we have to take care of ourselves and each other.\u201d<\/p>\n
Saturday\u2019s distribution was a collaborative effort between the Independence Heights Super Neighborhood, the Redevelopment Council, the Ministers Alliance, the Houston Food Bank, and several area churches \u2014 all working together to lift up a community with deep roots and a proud history.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis community understands that we are in fact our brother\u2019s keeper,\u201d said Pastor Rory Thompson. \u201cWe can do far more together than we could apart.\u201d<\/p>\n
This year, many families are feeling the financial squeeze even more than usual, made worse by SNAP benefits that were restored just days before Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n
\u201cPutting SNAP back on two or three days before Thanksgiving still leaves a deficit for those who didn\u2019t receive their benefits,\u201d Paige explained.<\/p>\n
For others, any amount of support helps ease the strain of an already difficult season.<\/p>\n
\u201cI appreciate it,\u201d said Arnulfo Blanco. \u201cI appreciate God and these people who do this for the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
For Paige and other longtime leaders, watching neighbors step up for one another never gets old.<\/p>\n
When asked what it means to see the community come together in this way, she said simply: \u201cIt fills my heart with joy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Independence Heights has long relied on its own resilience \u2014 a commitment passed down through generations.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful thing,\u201d said Shay Simpson, who received food during the distribution. \u201cBecause without them, a lot of times people would have nothing. It\u2019s good to see the whole community come together and help others.\u201d<\/p>\n
On a day built around gratitude, what was shared in Independence Heights was more than food. It was hope, connection, and proof that this community shows up for its own, no matter how tough times get.<\/p>\n
