The actor-writer has experienced three pregnancy losses, and is now raising funds for women in need of reproductive healthcare.<\/p>\n

Two-time Tony Award winner Shaina Taub<\/a>, currently playing anarchist Emma Goldman in\u00a0Ragtime<\/a>\u00a0on Broadway, is taking a leave of absence from the production. Taub will be out January 6\u2013March 29, 2026.<\/p>\n

Taub is also the creator of\u00a0Suffs<\/a>, which is currently on a national tour.\u00a0In a moving post on Instagram<\/a>, the actor-writer revealed that she recently experienced a miscarriage, writing: “This is a\u00a0vulnerable topic often kept in the shadows, but I’m posting\u00a0in the hopes that someone reading feels less alone.\u00a0My husband Matt and I have been trying for a baby. In the\u00a0past year, I’ve been pregnant three times. But each time\u00a0ended in loss. A first trimester miscarriage during Suffs last\u00a0December. A second trimester TFMR, which stands for\u00a0termination for medical reasons (please look it up) in May.\u00a0And another miscarriage the week Ragtime opened.\u00a0Honestly, it’s been hell. After multiple hospitalizations, my\u00a0body badly needs a break. And my mind could use it too.”<\/p>\n

She then detailed that during her most recent miscarriage, she hemorrhaged so much blood that she passed out and\u00a0had to be hospitalized. To save her life, doctors\u00a0performed a D&C, a surgical procedure\u00a0to remove tissue from the uterus. Wrote Taub, with emphasis:\u00a0“A D&C\u00a0for miscarriage management is the exact same\u00a0procedure used for abortions\u2014and it’s illegal in over 20\u00a0states. If this had happened elsewhere, I might not have\u00a0made it. Thousands of American women face this crisis\u00a0daily. How many of them are bleeding out before they can\u00a0travel across state lines? As we sing in Ragtime\u2014what is\u00a0wrong with this country?”<\/p>\n

To raise awareness about the current lack of healthcare access for women in states where abortion is illegal, Taub and her husband\u00a0Matt Gehring have launched a fundraiser with the Mount Sinai Division of Complex Family Planning<\/a>. The organization provides reproductive healthcare\u00a0at no cost for women from states that restrict or ban abortion. Wrote Taub:\u00a0“This continues to be a messy, complicated experience, one\u00a0we don’t really have language or ritual for. I will try to find\u00a0more words another time. For now, thank you for reading,\u00a0and for considering a donation. To those suffering in any\u00a0degree of silence\u2014I hear you.”<\/p>\n

Ragtime\u00a0was recently extended to\u00a0June 14, 2026 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. The show stars\u00a0Joshua Henry<\/a> as Coalhouse Walker, Jr., Brandon Uranowitz<\/a> as Tateh, Caissie Levy<\/a> as Mother,\u00a0Colin Donnell<\/a> as Father, Nichelle Lewis<\/a> as Sarah, Ben Levi Ross<\/a> as Mother’s Younger Brother, Taub as Emma Goldman, Anna Grace Barlow<\/a> as Evelyn Nesbit, John Clay III<\/a> as Booker T. Washington, Rodd Cyrus<\/a> as Harry Houdini, and Nick Barrington<\/a> as The Little Boy, along with Ellie May Sennett<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ragtime opened October 16 after beginning previews September 26\u2014read what critics had to say here<\/a>. Newly appointed LCT Artistic Director Lear deBessonet is at the helm after creating the production last year for a short gala run at New York City Center<\/a>. A cast album will also be released, though a date has not been announced.<\/p>\n

The current cast also features Tabitha Lawing<\/a> as The Little Girl, along with Nicholas Barr\u00f3n<\/a>, Lauren Blackman<\/a>, Allison Blackwell<\/a>, Briana Carlson-Goodman<\/a>, Jordan Chin<\/a>, Billy Cohen<\/a>, Rheaume Crenshaw<\/a>, Charity Ang\u00e9l Dawson<\/a>, Ellie Fishman<\/a>, Jason Forbach<\/a>, Ta\u2019Nika Gibson, David Jennings<\/a>, Kaleb Johnson<\/a>, Marina Kondo<\/a>, Morgan Marcell<\/a>, Kane Emmanuel Miller<\/a>, Tom Nelis<\/a>, Kent Overshown<\/a>, Kayla Pecchioni<\/a>, John Rapson<\/a>, Deandre Sevon<\/a>, Jacob Keith Watson<\/a>, and Alan Wiggins<\/a>. Swings and understudies Eean Sherrod Cochran<\/a>, Kerry Conte<\/a>, Nick Gaswirth<\/a>, Jackson Parker Gill<\/a>, Jenny Mollet<\/a>, Matthew Scott<\/a>, and Ellie May Sennett round out the company. Casting is by The Telsey Office<\/a>‘s Craig Burns.<\/p>\n

The production features choreography by Ellenore Scott<\/a>, set design by David Korins<\/a>, costume design by Linda Cho<\/a>, lighting design by Adam Honore\u0301, sound design by Kai Harada<\/a>, projection design by 59 Studio, and hair and wig design by Tom Watson<\/a>. Music director James Moore<\/a> is conducting a 28-piece orchestra playing the original orchestrations by William David Brohn<\/a>, and vocal arrangements by Flaherty. Ann James is sensitivity specialist, and Cody Renard Richard<\/a> serves as production stage manager.<\/p>\n

Based on a novel by E.L. Doctorow<\/a>, Ragtime blends fact and fiction telling the story of New York City at the dawn of the 20th century, with a book by Terrence McNally<\/a>, music by Flaherty, and lyrics by Ahrens. The story focuses on Coalhouse Walker, Jr., a Black man who buys a Model T Ford and sets off a chain of events that encompass all levels of New York City society, along with magician Harry Houdini, industrialist Henry Ford, celebrity party girl Evelyn Nesbit, civil rights leader Booker T. Washington, architect Stanford White, anarchist Emma Goldman, a Jewish Latvian immigrant who becomes a movie director, and an upper class white family living in suburban New Rochelle.<\/p>\n
