The Giants run Jaxson Dart, but they won\u2019t rush him.<\/p>\n

Dart did not clear the NFL\u2019s concussion protocol in time to play Sunday against the Lions, head coach Mike Kafka announced before Friday\u2019s practice.<\/p>\n

Jameis Winston will make his second consecutive start.<\/p>\n

There was optimism early in the week<\/a> that Dart \u2013 who was back on the practice field last Friday for the first time since his concussion on Nov. 9 \u2013 would advance through the five stages by the end of this week.<\/p>\n

But he repeated the limited non-contact practice Wednesday and Thursday.<\/p>\n

It left him time to gain medical clearance after practicing in full Friday, but the Giants are not taking any chances<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dart has been checked for a concussion four times as a rookie, but he passed the first three tests.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s looked great,\u201d Winston said when asked how Dart looked in Thursday\u2019s practice. \u201cNothing\u2019s changed. He\u2019s a young superstar, and he\u2019s continued to improve every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

No two concussions are exactly the same.<\/p>\n

Daniel Jones returned from a concussion without missing a game for the Giants in 2021, while the Texans\u2019 C.J. Stroud missed his third straight game Thursday night due to a concussion.<\/p>\n

Like Jones, Dart is a dual-threat who is learning on the fly how to not leave himself susceptible to big hits in the NFL. The Giants could do him a favor by calling fewer designed runs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re all crossing our fingers for (Dart),\u201d interim head coach Mike Kafka said before Thursday\u2019s practice. \u201cHopefully it all comes out clear. It\u2019s up to the doctors. When he\u2019s live and ready to go, we\u2019ll fire him up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Winston, who began the season as a third-stringer, will be backed up by Russell Wilson. He led three touchdown drives against the Packers but committed two fourth-quarter turnovers.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never know when those opportunities come around,\u201d Winston said. \u201cI was just ready for it. I wanted to get us a win. At the end of the day, that\u2019s all I would love. I was grateful to be back there competing \u2013 just ball and have fun with the guys.\u201d<\/p>\n
