Weiss<\/a>, the former president and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWeiss left the Met in 2023, having helped lead that New York institution for eight years. Since then, he has served as a professor and a senior adviser to the provost for the arts at Johns Hopkins University, the Baltimore school whose graduate art history program Weiss attended and formerly chaired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe begins as director and CEO of the Philadelphia Art Museum on December 1, according to an announcement by the institution on Friday. That announcement said that Weiss would \u201cguide the art museum through at least 2028, providing stability for staff, stakeholders, and the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Articles<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-artnews-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/GettyImages-1213792905.jpg\" alt=\"A staircase leading to a museum with two flags flying.\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe Philadelphia Art Museum is one of America\u2019s great cultural treasures, with an extraordinary collection, a dedicated staff, and deep connections to its community,\u201d Weiss said in a statement. \u201cIt is a privilege and an honor to serve during this important moment, and I look forward to working with the Board, staff, and stakeholders to ensure the art museum continues its vital mission and advances its strategic priorities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tControversy over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/philadelphia-art-museum-director-dismissed-sasha-suda-1234760126\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sudden dismissal<\/a> of Sasha Suda, the museum\u2019s previous director and CEO, will hang in the background of Weiss\u2019s appointment, though her departure was not mentioned in the institution\u2019s release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSuda reportedly received an email on November 4 that she was being terminated for \u201ccause,\u201d without details on what the cause was. She had led the museum since 2022, and has since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/sasha-suda-investigated-philadelphia-art-museum-lawsuit-1234760847\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued the museum<\/a>, alleging that board members falsely accused her of \u201cmisusing Museum funds for personal gain,\u201d as her lawsuit put it. An investigation at the museum brought by the trustees reportedly centered around her salary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHer dismissal came not long after the museum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/philadelphia-museum-of-art-rebrands-philadelphia-art-museum-1234756332\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rebranded<\/a> from the Philadelphia Museum of Art to the Philadelphia Art Museum. Though the museum\u2019s new acronym is officially PhAM, it has been widely parodied online as PhArt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe museum has provided few comments on Suda\u2019s departure other than one sent to the press following her lawsuit, which the institution characterized as being \u201cwithout merit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSuda alleged that she had butted heads with Ellen Caplan, the museum\u2019s board chair, who also did not address Suda\u2019s dismissal on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn a statement, Caplan said, \u201cWe are extraordinarily fortunate to have someone of Dan Weiss\u2019s caliber and experience step into this critical role.
