Darwin has hit fever pitch in its final preparations for the impending arrival of Cyclone Fina<\/a>, with winding queues at petrol stations, bottle shops and the city’s dump.<\/p>\n

The system is expected to start impacting the Northern Territory capital by early Saturday morning, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) predicting it could reach as high as a category three system.<\/p>\n

The BOM’s Shenagh Gamble said the worst of the conditions in Darwin were expected on Saturday.<\/p>\n

She expected Darwin residents would be told on Saturday to take shelter as destructive winds and severe thunderstorms developed.<\/p>\n

“There may be periods during the day where conditions seem to ease, and this is typical during a cyclone event, but it will be temporary, so do not assume that the danger has passed until you have been advised that it has,” she said.<\/p>\n

Outside the city’s main hardware store in Coconut Grove today, residents were filing out with trolleys full to the hilt with sandbags, gas canisters and eskies.<\/p>\n

Darwin residents for 33 years, Jun and Ara MacQuinto, were among those collecting their last goods and getting ready to ride out the storm.<\/p>\n

“We’re not panicking, just getting enough for a few days,” Ara said.<\/p>\n

Leanyer bottle shop worker Finnan Carmichael said beers sales had been booming.<\/p>\n

“It’s probably about triple the amount they usually drink, which is a lot,”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

he said.<\/p>\n

Supermarket owner Ben Feick said the cyclone had seen around 30 per cent more people coming through his Nightcliff grocery store doors.<\/p>\n

“It’s good for business, bad for people,” he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Feick said supplies like toilet paper, fruit and vegetables have been flying off the shelves, with people buying for days ahead.<\/p>\n

Darwin resident Helena Martel said while Fina marked the first cyclone she had experienced, she was not feeling overly nervous.<\/p>\n

“We’ll just stay at home and make it through it,” she said.<\/p>\n

“I’m excited, I mean, I grew up in central Africa, so I’m pretty familiar with that type of weather, we’ll just wait through it.”<\/p>\n

Caravanner assessing options for storm<\/p>\n

Darwin resident Steve Wilkie said he was deciding on whether or not to would move his caravan further south as the weather started to deteriorate.<\/p>\n

“I’m just probably more worried about the van, because it is sort of all I own so I just want to keep that safe really,” he said.<\/p>\n

“But I’d love to stay and see it all pan out.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mr Wilkie said seeing the empty shelves in the supermarket was a flashback to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

“I was walking through the supermarket and all the water was gone, and the noodles were gone,” he said.<\/p>\n

Ferries suspended as cyclone nears<\/p>\n

Across the harbour from Darwin, ferry services to Mandorah have been suspended, with SeaLink to make a decision on Monday about when services will resume.<\/p>\n

Ferries to the Tiwi Islands have also stopped running as the storm approaches.<\/p>\n

Mandorah resident Josh Keating described the decision as “premature”, meaning residents must drive the 120 kilometre route into Darwin if they need to get into town.<\/p>\n

Mr Keating said access was always the biggest issue Mandorah, but had preparations underway across the harbour.<\/p>\n

“I haven’t prepared a party yet but certainly we will ride the storm out together,” he said.<\/p>\n

Where is Cyclone Fina expected to go?<\/a><\/p>\n

Tropical Cyclone Fina is currently packing sustained winds of 75 kilometres per hour near its centre.<\/p>\n

Other Mandorah residents such as Cherie Nichols were just grateful to get a long weekend.<\/p>\n

Cyclone threatens rough sleepers<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, work to help some of Darwin’s most vulnerable residents has been underway.<\/p>\n

Larrakia Nation outreach manager, Aaron Motlop, said patrols had been hitting the city’s streets warning rough sleepers of the approaching dangers.<\/p>\n

“The people visiting here and sleeping rough continue to be our highest priority,” Mr Motlop said.<\/p>\n

The NT has the highest rates of homelessness in Australia, with a rate 12 times the national figure \u2014 and 87 per cent of those who are homeless in the territory are Indigenous.<\/p>\n

Mr Motlop said it is particularly dangerous for those sleeping rough if loose items haven’t been sealed and put away before the winds blow, particularly with housing shortages.<\/p>\n

“A lot of the accommodation options that are tied up through hostels and the like are all taken,”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

he said.<\/p>\n

“Clearly them staying on the streets and sleeping rough is a concern for us.”<\/p>\n
