{"id":396124,"date":"2025-11-22T04:13:29","date_gmt":"2025-11-22T04:13:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/396124\/"},"modified":"2025-11-22T04:13:29","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T04:13:29","slug":"rare-parma-wallabies-moved-to-predator-free-zones-after-50-years-in-blue-mountains-sanctuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/396124\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare parma wallabies moved to predator-free zones after 50 years in Blue Mountains sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For decades a tiny, elusive wallaby species was thought to be extinct \u2014 until a surprise discovery on a small island in, of all places, New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It turns out a governor of South Australia who was redeployed across the ditch in the 1860s took with him a collection of parma wallabies that he deposited on Kawau Island, north of Auckland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">About 100 years later, conservationist Peter Pigott caught wind of the colony through a friend and flew over to see the tiny mammals for himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was quite emotional,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It was thought to be extinct, and [I thought] this may be the only chance I&#8217;ll have in my lifetime \u2014 and the only person ever in Australia \u2014 to save a wallaby from extinction.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man sits in front of old house.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/6bd66575c108b63e75e4b676a9a7108a\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Peter Pigott has cared for the population at his Blue Mountains property for more than half a century. (ABC News: Lani Oataway)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At that moment he committed to dedicating his life to see the parma wallaby thrive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I said &#8216;I will buy more land at Mount Wilson [in the Blue Mountains], I will fence it, I will build dams and we&#8217;ll see if we can breed it back so that it survives&#8217;,&#8221; Mr Pigott said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">His daughter Heidi Pigott Irwin joined him on the &#8220;adventure&#8221; to Kawau Island.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s like everything just lined up, when everything&#8217;s right in the universe,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Ms Pigott Irwin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This property became available and dad said &#8216;that&#8217;s it, we&#8217;re buying it,&#8217; and he got all his friends to come and put this 12-foot fence right around the whole place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Parma wallabies eating food on the grass.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/c0b7351b4786882772746484d4d3d144\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Very little is still known about the parma wallaby. (ABC News: Lani Oataway)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The wider effort comes at a time as Mr Pigott nears 90 years of age and looks to hand over the stewardship of his population to organisations that run dedicated feral-free sanctuaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Peter has been looking after [the wallabies] for 50 years and he just can&#8217;t continue that any longer,&#8221; Mr Brewster said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Really that was always his intention. This wasn&#8217;t the end game behind a small four-hectare fence.
