No one’s buying it.

Senator J.D. Vance has been celebrating September’s jobs numbers as a victory for Trump economic policies, but the Today in Ohio podcast team is calling him out for what appears to be his disconnection from our economic reality.

The latest federal jobs report tells a troubling story that Vance seems to have missed. As Laura Johnston explained on the podcast, “The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that employment in July and August actually was overstated for those months,” she said. Vance has been talking about September numbers, which were steady, while ignoring that for the year, the jobs picture is bleak.

“JD Vance does not seem to have received this memo,” Johnston said. “Because he was declaring on Thursday that there were stronger than expected September jobs and that Trump economic policies are actually working.”

Chris Quinn said Vance’s false statements come so regularly that he has lost his credibility.

“I don’t know who wins the battle for the most soulless politician on the landscape right now, him or the House Speaker, Johnson. Because they just make stuff up… They’ve completely sold their souls to Donald Trump. They stand for nothing.”

The disconnect between Vance’s statements and economic reality appears stark. According to Johnston, Vance is “claiming that in the first 10 months of the Trump Economy. We increased take home pay by about $1200 adjusting for inflation,” but she quickly added, “I have no idea where he’s getting this.”

Even more telling is that voter sentiment doesn’t align with Vance’s rosy picture. Johnston mentioned a Fox News report stating, “76% of voters rate the economy negatively compared to 67% in July and 70% at the close of Biden’s tenure.”

When even Fox News is reporting public dissatisfaction with the economy, it raises serious questions about the basis for Vance’s optimistic claims. Quinn summed it up with a pointed observation: “When you lose Fox News and you’re President Trump, you’re in big trouble. Because they’ve been your biggest cheerleader for years.”

Listen to the discussion here.

Listen to full “Today in Ohio” episodes where Chris Quinn hosts our daily half-hour news podcast, with Editorial Board member Lisa Garvin, Impact Editor Leila Atassi and Content Director Laura Johnston.

If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
