CLAY COUNTY \u2013\u00a0Bryce\u00a0Bagley thought the Wheeler\u2019s BBQ Ribs\u00a0and Wings\u00a0Cookoff at his parents\u2019 ranch would draw close friends and family.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Organizer Jason Wheeler knew\u00a0he\u2019d\u00a0get 30 of his close barbecue teams to attend\u00a0the Healing Hearts Project fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 15.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Both wildly underestimated the generosity of the community or the love of barbecue, because more than 300 people gobbled up more than 400 dinners to help the organization dedicated to helping those like Bagley\u00a0affected by congenital heart defects.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cFor the number of people that actually showed up from the community, and you know, even outside of Clay County, that came in to support the First Annual Rib and Wing Cook Off, and the number of dinners we had planned for, it was a big success,\u201d Wheeler said. \u201cIt was overwhelming for us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Wheeler said the goal was to raise $5,000. Like their attendance expectation, he missed badly. They wound up sending $11,358\u00a0to\u00a0the Healing Hearts Foundation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
27 teams competed for Best in Ribs. The panel of judges included Sheriff Michelle Cook, County Commission Chair Betsy\u00a0Condon\u00a0and\u00a0Barbecue\u00a0Restaurateur\u00a0Gary\u00a0Park.\u00a0Rum Runners BBQ won first place and $500, while BRGY BBQ was voted as the People\u2019s Choice winner.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t believe\u00a0this many\u00a0people came out here,\u201d Bagley said. \u201cIt makes me want to fight a little harder.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Wheeler said he already has plans for another BBQ competition next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u00a0put\u00a0this\u00a0on for the\u00a0Healing\u00a0Hearts\u00a0Project,\u00a0and everyone was amazing,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cWe want to thank all the teams that came out and showed support,\u00a0as well as the media. A lot of\u00a0good friends came\u00a0out\u00a0and\u00a0helped.
