(Courtesy: State of Hawai\u02bbi DLNR \/ NOAA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacioos.hawaii.edu\/shoreline\/slr-hawaii\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.pacioos.hawaii.edu\/shoreline\/slr-hawaii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The Hawai\u02bbi Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission (CCMAC) has launched an updated version of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacioos.hawaii.edu\/shoreline\/slr-hawaii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">State of Hawai\u02bbi Sea Level Rise Viewer<\/a>,\u00a0an online tool giving communities and local officials clearer insight into the growing threats facing our coastlines.<\/p>\n<p>Hawai\u02bbi is\u00a0projected to experience\u00a04 feet\u00a0of sea level rise by the end of the century, according to the\u00a0latest NOAA interagency sea level rise report. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says sea level rise will continue for thousands of years, even with drastic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0viewer was developed through partnership between the Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System, the Coastal Research Collaborative at the University of Hawai\u02bbi and the University of Hawai\u02bbi Sea Grant College Program, along with CCMAC, DLNR and the Hawai\u02bbi Office of Planning and Sustainable Development.\u00a0Improvements include\u00a0expanded data, user-friendly guidance and social vulnerability indicators.<\/p>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p>First released in 2017, this\u00a0update\u00a0seeks to help Hawai\u02bbi residents, planners and beachgoers get a better picture of how sea level rise may impact them\u00a0at a range of\u00a0projected heights.\u00a0A new feature is\u00a0the addition of passive flooding layers between\u00a04\u00a0and\u00a08 feet\u00a0from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which provides valuable information about high-tide still-water flooding in higher sea level rise conditions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"599\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/slr_potent_fld_hwys_3_pt_2_ft-1024x599.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-507782\"\/>Data source: Tetra Tech, Inc. combining hazard exposure data layers from the University of Hawai\u02bbi Coastal Geology Group<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"599\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/social_indicators_block-1024x599.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-507781\"\/>Data source: Tetra Tech, Inc. combining hazard exposure data layers from the University of Hawai\u02bbi Coastal Geology Group<\/p>\n<p>The viewer\u00a0contains\u00a0descriptions of the NOAA data as well as guidance on when to use different sea level rise scenarios and data sets from\u00a0state sea level rise reports. The updates also include the addition of a\u00a0\u201csocial indicators\u201d\u00a0layer which allows users to view factors that can contribute to vulnerability\u00a0from\u00a0sea level rise impacts, such as houses built before 1970, with household members over the age of 65 and those identified as low income.
