\u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d\u00a0is one step closer to another golden moment:\u00a0The Oscars. The Netflix phenomenon is among 35 films features eligible for the animated feature film category at the 98th Academy Awards.<\/p>\n
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released on Friday lists of all the films eligible for animated, documentary and international feature prizes at next year\u2019s Oscars.<\/p>\n
Though \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d made its name on Netflix, it also received a qualifying theatrical run in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco in June, which satisfied the film academy\u2019s requirements for Oscar consideration. Its UK theatrical run was not enough to qualify for the BAFTAs, however.<\/p>\n
Other animated titles that qualified for the Oscars animated feature category were Neon\u2019s \u201cArco,\u201d Disney\u2019s \u201cElio\u201d and \u201cZootopia 2,\u201d GKids\u2019 \u201cLittle Am\u00e9lie or the Character of Rain,\u201d Netflix\u2019s \u201cIn Your Dreams\u201d and Crunchyroll\/Sony\u2019s \u201cDemon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle\u201d and \u201cChainsaw Man \u2013 The Movie: Reze Arc.\u201d Notably, the Chinese blockbuster\u00a0\u201cNe Zha 2\u201d\u00a0was not among the 35 titles listed.<\/p>\n
\u201cKPop Demon Hunters,\u201d which Netflix has said is its most watched film of all time, has amassed more than 541 million hours viewed worldwide. It\u2019s\u00a0the highest charting soundtrack of 2025\u00a0with eight of its songs landing on the Billboard Hot 100. It also made a\u00a0splash in theaters in August\u00a0where it was estimated to have made around $18 million (which would have topped the charts if Netflix released theatrical earnings) and got a subsequent release over\u00a0Halloween weekend. Netflix won their first animated feature Oscar in 2022 for\u00a0\u201cGuillermo del Toro\u2019s Pinocchio.\u201d<\/p>\n
There are also 201 documentaries and 86 international features eligible, including\u00a0\u201cSentimental Value\u201d\u00a0(Norway),\u00a0\u201cSir\u00e2t\u201d\u00a0(Spain), \u201cThe Secret Agent\u201d (Brazil),\u00a0\u201cIt Was Just an Accident\u201d\u00a0(France),\u00a0\u201cThe Voice of Hind Rajab\u201d\u00a0(Tunisia) and \u201cMy Father\u2019s Shadow\u201d (United Kingdom).\u00a0\u201c2000 Meters to Andriivka,\u201d\u00a0a co-production between the AP and PBS Frontline, is eligible in both categories. Both documentary and international titles will be winnowed to a 10-film shortlist that will be revealed on Dec. 16.<\/p>\n
\u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d fans will have to wait for nomination morning on Jan. 22 to hear whether or not they made the cut for animated feature. It\u2019s largely expected to be a player in the original song category as well, where \u201cGolden\u201d is among the songs being submitted.<\/p>\n
