Kennedy, disclosed Saturday that she has terminal cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S6JJ6EBSENARTERP7C6UXIX254\">In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/the-weekend-essay\/a-battle-with-my-blood?utm_source=nl&amp;utm_brand=tny&amp;utm_mailing=TNY_Daily_112225&amp;utm_campaign=aud-dev&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=tny_daily_digest&amp;bxid=5c748aca24c17c67f89de943&amp;cndid=19825381&amp;hasha=08a0bf749addd26751b403129c63c230&amp;hashb=c8e9a51671a24a2946067dfd5c7777ada90b7f71&amp;hashc=47c8bfbe608e6aff2a9e2a0c34156259a7d424a5d3bcabfcfd0d4538b16e9320&amp;esrc=&amp;mbid=CRMNYR012019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">essay published by The New Yorker<\/a>, Schlossberg, 35, announced she has acute myeloid leukemia, with a rare mutation called Inversion 3. She was diagnosed on May 25, 2024, on the same day her daughter was born.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZH3RN5C755ERNILYKLO6DMUOSA\">A few hours after delivering her second child, Schlossberg said doctors discovered her white blood cell count was abnormally high, which ultimately led to her diagnosis. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IJ35EJHY4NCDBPVEOPUDUZGN7Q\">She noted that she could not be cured by standard treatment, and that she faced months of chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant and more chemo to keep the cancer from returning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2LYCVYUPAFHWLMP33QBNQ44GKM\">\u201cI did not\u2014could not\u2014believe that they were talking about me,&#8221; Schlossberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/the-weekend-essay\/a-battle-with-my-blood?utm_source=nl&amp;utm_brand=tny&amp;utm_mailing=TNY_Daily_112225&amp;utm_campaign=aud-dev&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=tny_daily_digest&amp;bxid=5c748aca24c17c67f89de943&amp;cndid=19825381&amp;hasha=08a0bf749addd26751b403129c63c230&amp;hashb=c8e9a51671a24a2946067dfd5c7777ada90b7f71&amp;hashc=47c8bfbe608e6aff2a9e2a0c34156259a7d424a5d3bcabfcfd0d4538b16e9320&amp;esrc=&amp;mbid=CRMNYR012019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/the-weekend-essay\/a-battle-with-my-blood?utm_source=nl&amp;utm_brand=tny&amp;utm_mailing=TNY_Daily_112225&amp;utm_campaign=aud-dev&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=tny_daily_digest&amp;bxid=5c748aca24c17c67f89de943&amp;cndid=19825381&amp;hasha=08a0bf749addd26751b403129c63c230&amp;hashb=c8e9a51671a24a2946067dfd5c7777ada90b7f71&amp;hashc=47c8bfbe608e6aff2a9e2a0c34156259a7d424a5d3bcabfcfd0d4538b16e9320&amp;esrc=&amp;mbid=CRMNYR012019\">wrote<\/a> in the essay. \u201cI had swum a mile in the pool the day before, nine months pregnant. I wasn\u2019t sick. I didn\u2019t feel sick. I was actually one of the healthiest people I knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QPIF5S4TD5CX5F6VZFDRWRHSCQ\">\u201cThis could not possibly be my life,\u201d Schlossberg later added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AL2V3FP4EJDFLPIUQQEUJCSU4E\">Schlossberg spent five weeks at Columbia-Presbyterian before her abnormal cell count improved enough, allowing her to undergo a round of treatment at her home. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KF2US5AGRJCOPIY4ZLRJ2RBSTU\">She was also treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering, where she received a bone marrow transplant. However, she eventually relapsed, despite a new round of chemotherapy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7TUCAR3DTJFTNGNJ42WD7PHM64\">\u201cMy parents and my brother and sister, too, have been raising my children and sitting in my various hospital rooms almost every day for the last year and a half,\u201d Schlossberg wrote. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2IDW3E4QBNED3LFO6FUV7C5FS4\">\u201cThey have held my hand unflinchingly while I have suffered, trying not to show their pain and sadness in order to protect me from it,\u201d she added. \u201cThis has been a great gift, even though I feel their pain every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MRGXVQHPTRHHVHSXDEPY6ELVPM\">She continued: \u201cFor my whole life, I have tried to be good, to be a good student and a good sister and a good daughter, and to protect my mother and never make her upset or angry. Now I have added a new tragedy to her life, to our family\u2019s life, and there\u2019s nothing I can do to stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FTDC5AQLZRDA5IHQAVFURBXPZU\">In January, Schlossberg joined a clinical trial for CAR T-cell therapy, which is a type of immunotherapy that has helped fight against certain blood cancers, including leukemia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P5NFA2CAOFD6ZO5BI2KTHGRLTY\">\u201cDuring the latest clinical trial, my doctor told me that he could keep me alive for a year, maybe,\u201d Schlossberg wrote. \u201cMy first thought was that my kids, whose faces live permanently on the inside of my eyelids, wouldn\u2019t remember me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ATIAJBKMJFAWNKDYAMNJC6W6BY\">In her essay, Schlossberg also addressed concerns about access to medical care under the current presidential administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3DC6YHASSVFUFOXAXZIGRHBCX4\">Throughout her CAR-T treatment, Schlossberg detailed that Health and Human Services Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/topic\/robert-f-kennedy-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/topic\/robert-f-kennedy-jr\/\">Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a>, her cousin, was in the process of being nominated and confirmed to serve in President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/topic\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/topic\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> cabinet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VVQZCB7KDZHLTNOIOUHD6HLMPA\">Schlossberg went on to sharply criticize Kennedy over what she described as his defiance of \u201clogic and common sense\u201d and his funding cuts to vaccine research since starting his role in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"T4JUXXCBORD5NGCML3FXEAZK5Q\">\u201cBobby is a known skeptic of vaccines, and I was especially concerned that I wouldn\u2019t be able to get mine again, leaving me to spend the rest of my life immunocompromised, along with millions of cancer survivors, small children, and the elderly,\u201d Schlossberg wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DA54GLLTOZBELGKQMEJGOHIWQM\">Schlossberg, an environmental journalist and <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/ridgewood\/jfk-s-granddaughter-hired-as-a-reporter-at-the-record\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/ridgewood\/jfk-s-granddaughter-hired-as-a-reporter-at-the-record\">former municipal reporter for The Bergen Record<\/a>, said she is now focusing on being present with her children. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YSY27YIK4FGSVB4RSISWL54BKU\">\u201cSometimes I trick myself into thinking I\u2019ll remember this forever, I\u2019ll remember this when I\u2019m dead,\u201d Schlossberg said of her memories. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ACEE4LSSLZC6XFRGSQ3KRY723Q\">\u201cObviously, I won\u2019t,\u201d she wrote. \u201cBut since I don\u2019t know what death is like and there\u2019s no one to tell me what comes after it, I\u2019ll keep pretending.
