No crew members survived. (Chicago Tribune archive)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1912:<\/strong> The Rouse Simmons, known as the \u201cChristmas Tree Ship,\u201d vanished in a storm on Lake Michigan during its trip from Michigan to Chicago. There were <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-christmas-ship-lost-on\/184401648\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no survivors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the trees and evergreen wreaths that washed ashore were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-trees-from-ship-may-help\/184401875\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-trees-from-ship-may-help\/184401875\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold to benefit the families<\/a>\u00a0of the 17-member crew.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"bN4hsCLvTe\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2012\/11\/11\/when-the-christmas-spirit-foundered-in-chicago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">When the Christmas spirit foundered in Chicago<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The wife of its Capt. Herman Schuenemann\u2019s, affectionately called the \u201cChristmas Tree Lady,\u201d continued the family business, according to Tribune archives. She <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-woman-skipper-of-christm\/184421704\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-woman-skipper-of-christm\/184421704\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died<\/a> in 1933. Her daughters carried on for a few more years, but by the end of the decade, the Christmas Tree Ship seemed to fade from the city\u2019s landscape.<\/p>\n<p>A diver found the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-dive-to-rouse-simmons-c\/184401978\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-dive-to-rouse-simmons-c\/184401978\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">well-preserved remains<\/a>\u00a0of the Rouse Simmons in 1971, resting in about 170-foot deep waters northeast of Two Rivers, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"&quot;Picture of Dorian Gray, 1943\/44, by artist Ivan Albright in an exhibit of his work titled &quot;Flesh,&quot; on May 14, 2018. (Edward Wagner\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1986:<\/strong> Midway through the second quarter, Green Bay Packer nose tackle Charles Martin body-slammed Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Referee Jerry Markbreit reacted quickly by ejecting Martin and penalized him 15 yards for roughing the passer.<\/p>\n<p>McMahon was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-mcmahons-season-over-c\/185410100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">out for the rest of the season<\/a>. Martin was suspended for two games without pay \u2014 the stiffest penalty assessed until then by NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"x6cEfyQPzu\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2020\/05\/13\/michael-jordan-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Jordan: Top moments and stats in the life and career of the Chicago Bulls and NBA legend<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>1991:<\/strong> At the free-throw line, Michael Jordan <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-bulls-huff-and-puff-but\/185410749\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smiled at Denver Nuggets rookie Dikembe Mutombo<\/a> and told him the shot was for him. Jordan closed his eyes and sunk the free throw. (Nuccio DiNuzzo\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2015:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2015\/11\/23\/michael-jordan-reaches-settlement-with-jewel-dominicks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Jordan<\/a> reached a settlement with supermarkets Jewel-Osco and Dominick\u2019s over a pair of ads in a 2009 commemorative edition of Sports Illustrated that allegedly contained unauthorized use of his name, according to spokespeople for both sides.
