\n\tInvestigators trying to determine Celeste Rivas\u2019 cause of death were clear from the start that the 14-year-old girl\u2019s remains were \u201cseverely decomposed\u201d when found hidden in singer D4vd\u2019s Tesla<\/a> in September. Now, it appears the medical examiner has reason to believe the remains were \u201crefrigerated\u201d somehow before they were wrapped in a black bag<\/a> in the vehicle\u2019s trunk, a source with knowledge of the investigation tells Rolling Stone.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe source says investigators are \u201cexploring\u201d the theory that the remains were either frozen or refrigerated before the transfer, and they\u2019ve called in outside experts to opine on what potentially happened before a final autopsy is released. It wasn\u2019t immediately clear how freezing or refrigeration might play into a final ruling, but it could make pinpointing a date of death much more difficult.<\/p>\n

\n\tRolling Stone reached out to the Los Angeles Police Department for comment. <\/p>\n

\n\tTMZ was first to report the development<\/a> in the criminal investigation on Sunday. Citing sources connected to the probe, the outlet said Rivas\u2019 body had been \u201cpartially frozen\u201d and apparently had been thawing out while stowed in the Tesla. According to the outlet, Rivas\u2019 head was severed and her limbs were \u201ccut into multiple pieces.\u201d The cause of death \u201cwill most likely be \u2018undetermined,’\u201d TMZ reported.<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier this week, sources told NBC News <\/a>and ABC7<\/a> that D4vd<\/a> is now considered a suspect in the death of Rivas. The platinum-selling singer, born David Anthony Burke, has not been charged with any crime, and his lawyer has not responded to multiple requests for comment.<\/p>\n

\n\tBurke was out of state on a national concert tour when police made the grisly discovery of Rivas\u2019 remains on Sept. 8. The girl\u2019s body was found after staff at a tow yard in Hollywood reported that the vehicle was \u201cemanating a foul odor and attracting flies,\u201d according to a search warrant affidavit obtained by\u00a0Rolling Stone.<\/p>\n

\n\tRivas, who would have turned 15 years old the day before she was discovered, had been reported missing by her family on multiple occasions in 2024, according to online missing person fliers. The teen\u2019s mother\u00a0reportedly told TMZ<\/a>\u00a0that her daughter had a \u201cboyfriend\u201d named David, and photos and video purportedly showing Rivas and Burke together or at the same events have circulated on social media.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe impounded Tesla was towed from an affluent area in the Hollywood Hills known as the Bird Streets. Neighbors there previously told\u00a0Rolling Stone\u00a0that it had been seen in various locations around the neighborhood as far back as May. They said the vehicle had been sitting in the spot from which it was towed for at least three weeks.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter Rivas was identified, law enforcement searched a house on Doheny Place, around the block from where the car was towed. The home\u2019s owner later confirmed to\u00a0Rolling Stone\u00a0that the\u00a0residence had been rented to Burke\u2019s manager<\/a>, Josh Marshall, last year, starting in February 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBurke, 20, has not commented publicly on the teen\u2019s death. A day after the remains were found, he performed at a show in Minneapolis.
