(Photo by Spencer Platt\/Getty Images)\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Catholic churches in New York City have reported a surge in adult converts this year<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">New York City has seen a massive influx of people converting to Catholicism since Pope Leo was elected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">During a Sunday night mass at St. Joseph\u2019s Church in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishstar.com\/culture\/food-drink\/best-irish-pubs-manhattan-dead-28427191\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenwich Village<\/a>, Father Jonah Teller announced that the number of people enrolled in the parish\u2019s Order of Christian Initiation of Adults had tripled in the past year, with roughly 130 new converts. According to the Post, their Sunday evening masses have become overcrowded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">\u201cWe\u2019re out of space and exploring adding more masses,\u201d Father Daniel Ray told The Post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">The Diocese of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishstar.com\/all-about\/brooklyn\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Brooklyn<\/a> also reported a surge. In 2024, they had 538 adults enter the church \u2014 almost twice the amount as the year prior.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_Vatican-Pope-25303397184031.jpg\" alt=\"Pope Leo XIV\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Catholicism is becoming more appealing to young people(Image: AP)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">According to the Post, all of the priests acknowledged that numbers will likely drop before the Easter Vigil, but they still expect them to remain high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">While Catholic churches across the country have been reporting more conversions among young people, the number of people turning to faith in the extremely secular <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishstar.com\/all-about\/new-york-city\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">New York City<\/a> is particularly unusual.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got a real booming thing happening here, and it\u2019s not because of some marketing campaign,\u201d Fr. Ray told the Post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">Many of the adult converts are searching for stability and comfort in the rapidly changing and fractured modern world. The surge seems to coincide with the election of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishstar.com\/news\/us-news\/who-robert-francis-prevost-inside-35194961\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">America&#8217;s first pope, Pope Leo XIV<\/a>, whose <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishstar.com\/news\/us-news\/pope-leo-ice-donald-trump-36270922\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">more liberal views<\/a> may be appealing to the younger demographic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">Kiegan Lenihan, who is in OCIA at St. Joseph\u2019s, told The Post, \u201cMy generation is watching things fall apart. When things all seem to be going wrong in greater society, maybe organized religion isn\u2019t that bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">\u201cMaterially, we have everything at our fingertips, and it\u2019s not reaching our hearts,\u201d Fr. Teller explained to the Post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">Other converts who spoke to the Post cited reasons like depression, anxiety, feeling unfulfilled, personal loss, and disillusionment as reasons for their turn to faith.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">Mark Carlson, a lapsed Catholic who has found his way back to the church, told the Post he realized Catholicism offered all the things people were seeking through therapy and social groups, like running clubs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">\u201cWhat I hadn\u2019t appreciated before is that these are good teachings.
