Jeffries during a meeting last week.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries, who was first elected to the House in 2013, will likely be the next House Speaker if the Democrats reclaim the majority in the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/tag\/midterm-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">midterm elections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) speaks to reporters in Washington, DC on November 19, 2025. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani is trying to strengthen ties with Democratic leadership in Washington and Albany to promote his affordability agenda \u2014 and protect the city\u2019s flank from from President Trump\u2019s threats to cut off funding after he takes office.<\/p>\n<p>The DSA Citywide Electoral Working Group Saturday night said 52% or 626 members voted against recommending Chi Oss\u00e9 for endorsement in New York\u2019s 8th Congressional District, while 46% or 555 members voted yes.<\/p>\n<p>The district \u2014 shaped like a backward C \u2014 runs from the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Clinton Hill to Bed-Stuy, Brownsville, Canarsie, and Sheepshead Bay and Sea Gate.<\/p>\n<p>New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani speaks after meeting with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office of the White House. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast Wednesday, Council Member Oss\u00e9 addressed members of the Electoral Working Group (EWG) at a candidate forum. Following his remarks, EWG members engaged in a robust debate over the merits of Oss\u00e9\u2019s candidacy, the political terrain of the district, and the strategic considerations around committing our chapter to a potential campaign.
