PHOENIX \u2014 Two people were left dead after a car crashed into them at a high speed early Saturday morning in south Phoenix, according to authorities.<\/p>\n

A two-man patrol unit of the Phoenix Police Department responded around 1:35 a.m. to \u201ca large fire\u201d near the intersection of Baseline Road and Central Avenue<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The unit, while parked in a neighborhood near the intersection, had seen a car driving \u201cnorth at a high rate of speed\u201d just prior to the flames becoming visible. Upon arrival, the police found two vehicles had crashed into the Valley Metro light rail platform at Baseline\/Central Ave.<\/p>\n

Phoenix police were able to extinguish the fire, but both individuals who had been struck by the oncoming vehicle were pronounced dead on the scene.<\/p>\n

The driver who caused the accident was removed from their car and taken to a nearby hospital with \u201clife-threatening injuries,\u201d police said. His current condition was not provided.<\/p>\n

Once detectives took over the scene, they learned the high-speeding driver ran through a red light before crashing into the other vehicle the was heading west on a green light.<\/p>\n

The high-speeding driver showed signs of impairment when assessed by police.<\/p>\n

No other information was provided in this ongoing investigation.<\/p>\n
