{"id":400312,"date":"2025-11-24T01:45:20","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T01:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/400312\/"},"modified":"2025-11-24T01:45:20","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T01:45:20","slug":"pass-this-small-but-valuable-tweak-to-nycs-draconian-airbnb-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/400312\/","title":{"rendered":"Pass this small but valuable tweak to NYC&#8217;s draconian Airbnb ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For once, the City Council is on the verge of doing something sane: <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/28\/business\/airbnb-pushes-to-loosen-restrictions-on-renting-in-nyc-before-potential-mamdani-admin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Relaxing the insane ban on Airbnb<\/a> in one- and two-family owner-occupied homes.<\/p>\n<p>Such short-term rentals pose no threat to hotels, nor to the housing supply: Such houses barely exist in the prime tourist areas; this would mainly just let folks in more remote stretches of the city make a few bucks hosting guests who are, for example, attending a wedding in Staten Island.<\/p>\n<p>The commonsense measure does three things: Allow New Yorkers to share homes while away; increase the guest limit from two to four, and permit internal door locks to provide privacy for guests and hosts.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p>In \u201chotel desert\u201d communities <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/26\/business\/nyc-cracks-down-on-hundreds-of-airbnb-hosts-over-illegal-rentals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">outside Manhattan<\/a>, Airbnb rentals would be a godsend \u2014 and more than likely increase visitor spending and so boost embattled outer borough small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Even Christian Klossner, the city bureaucrat who <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/20\/us-news\/mayor-eric-adams-administration-comes-out-swinging-against-airbnb-bill-serious-concerns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">testified against the bill<\/a> at last week\u2019s council hearing, had to admit the anti-Airbnb Local Law 18 hasn\u2019t eased the housing shortage because it was never designed to lower rents.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPost Editorial Board<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet opinions and commentary from our columnists\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to our daily Post Opinion newsletter!\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Klossner plainly just want to<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/07\/us-news\/nycs-airbnb-ban-failed-to-lower-rents-or-boost-vacancies-report-finds\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> fend off any threat <\/a>to the onerous short-term-rental-registration system and roust enforcement mechanism \u2014 that is, his power base at the city Office of Special Enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Kudos to the council members daring to stand up to the relentless hotel unions by supporting this mild tweak to the Airbnb ban.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would still leave the city with the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/12\/us-news\/inside-airbnb-stealth-campaign-to-dilute-nycs-new-rental-laws-with-hidden-funding-of-grassroots-groups\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">toughest anti-short-term-rental regime<\/a>;
