TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) \u2014 Japan \u201ccrossed a red line\u201d with comments by its new leader suggesting a potential military intervention over Taiwan, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Sunday.<\/p>\n

Remarks earlier this month by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi<\/a> that a Chinese naval blockade or other action against Taiwan could be grounds for a Japanese military response were \u201cshocking,\u201d Wang said in a statement posted on the Chinese Foreign Ministry\u2019s website.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is shocking that Japan\u2019s current leaders have publicly sent the wrong signal of attempting military intervention in the Taiwan issue, said things they shouldn\u2019t have said, and crossed a red line that should not have been touched,\u201d Wang said.<\/p>\n

The most senior Chinese official to address the tensions so far, Wang added that China must \u201cresolutely respond\u201d to Japan\u2019s actions and that all countries have the responsibility to \u201cprevent the resurgence of Japanese militarism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Takaichi\u2019s remarks have led to rising tensions<\/a> between the two countries over the past few weeks. Beijing on Friday sent a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres criticizing Takaichi\u2019s \u201cgrave violation of international law\u201d and diplomatic norms.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Japan dares to attempt an armed intervention in the cross-Strait situation, it would be an act of aggression,\u201d China\u2019s U.N. Ambassador Fu Cong wrote in the letter. \u201cChina will resolutely exercise its right of self-defense under the UN Charter and international law and firmly defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beijing sees self-ruled Taiwan \u2014 a former Japanese colony \u2014 as its own territory, to be annexed by force if necessary. China objects to the involvement of other countries in Taiwan, notably the United States, which is the island\u2019s main supplier of weapons<\/a>, as well as U.S. allies in Asia, including Japan and the Philippines.<\/p>\n

Takaichi\u2019s<\/a> stance is seen as more forceful than that of previous Japanese prime ministers, who have expressed concern about China\u2019s threat<\/a> to Taiwan but haven\u2019t publicly said how Japan would respond.<\/p>\n
