I’m troubled by the recent actions of our political leaders — specifically Gov. Greg Abbott’s veto of $60 million in funding for summer lunches for our children and massive cutbacks in federal health and welfare programs in the president’s proposed budget in order to pay for additional tax cuts, predominantly for our richest citizens.

In around 750 B.C., God sent his messenger Amos to address the Kingdom of Israel. He condemned the luxurious lifestyle of the wealthy and decried the way in which the poor were treated. See Amos, Chapters 3 through 8. But nothing changed. Take a look at secular history for its consequences.

In his ministry, Jesus pointed out the requirements of righteousness, particularly as it relates to the marginalized. See Matthew 25:31-46.

Opinion

Get smart opinions on the topics North Texans care about.

Incidentally, the great religions of the world have parallel tenets. As Christians, do we speak out, particularly to members of Congress, or will we silently allow injustice to become the law of the land?

William F. Sanderson Jr., Dallas/Lake Highlands

A GOP senator’s sacrifice

I seldom have any support, compliments or otherwise non-criticisms for the GOP, but I will now make an exception. Sen. Thom Tillis, a diehard, dyed-in-the-wool Republican from North Carolina, did the unthinkable. Tillis is sacrificing his job rather than support the president’s big, bloated, God-awful bill.

He should be proud, unlike his fellow senators, not because he dislikes the president but because it will hurt his constituents.

Unlike all the other GOPers, including many older than he is, he placed the good of the people ahead of anything else. He knows (and the other Republicans do, too) the bill is unjust, unfair and just plain wrong.

It’s a shame that only three Republican senators were willing to do this.

Charles Elkins, Plano

Farming decency lost

Re: “Fairlife accused again of cruelty — Lawsuit says firm’s claim of humane care for dairy cows amounts to fraud,” Sunday news story.

It was very disheartening to read this story about the alleged abuse of dairy cows. My mother’s family had a dairy/truck crop farm in Maryland for nearly 100 years. The milk cows provided the majority of their income while truck crops (watermelons, cantaloupes and cucumbers) were an advantageous sideline.

My grandfather, then my uncle and finally my cousin grew the majority of their cattle feed. As with most family farms in the U.S., they were slowly bled to bankruptcy by the corporate farms undercutting their product prices. My cousin had to sell the dairy herd about eight years ago to prevent losing his land, which was collateral for the upgrades made on the dairy equipment by my uncle.

I spent my childhood summers on that farm and always helped with milking the cows. The cows were very well-behaved, knew the milking routine (they even had their favorite stalls) and were treated better than the family pets. The cows were allowed to have their calves and the calves were bottle fed until they were large enough to be sold as veal at the local stock market. The animals were never abused.

With the advent of corporate farming, all common sense and decency have gone out the window in order to assure the highest profit margin. The laborers are minimum-wage employees who are pressed to get the cows in the barn, milked and back into feedlot as fast as possible, not caring about what is required to achieve that goal.

The fact that Fairlife allegedly fails to hold their dairy suppliers accountable to a humane level of animal treatment is very sad, as is the demise of the American family farm.

Ken Fairchild, Allen

Political poisoning

I just heard that the president’s administration has renamed the Navy ship previously named for U.S. Navy veteran and LGBTQ+ rights activist Harvey Milk. It seems they are using the excuse that they are taking the politics out of the naming process. That’s rich!

It seems to me they are the ones poisoning just about everything with their political bent. They want to erase every individual of a minority group who has been honored or memorialized in any way. It is a true outrage!

Sara Miskimins, Dallas/Lake Highlands

Trash kicked to the curb

Re: “Let’s Roll With Smarter Trash Plan — Those without front driveways would keep alley pickup for now but pay more,” Monday editorial.

Those of us in the Royalhaven Addition (Royal/Webb Chapel/Forest) take interest in this editorial. Amid all discussions over the last several months, we were switched to curbside pickup. This happened almost six months ago with one week’s notice.

The trucks are staffed by a driver and two human collectors, exactly as in the alley. The alleys are narrow but passable. We find it ironic that solutions are indicated for the future while we have been a part of curbside for quite a while.

Everything negative about curbside has proved true for us. Storing containers out front and rolling the heavy carts to the curb have proved difficult. We help each other since so many of us are older or infirm. Our alleys are still required to be kept clean and free. We have not received any reduction in our costs.

Victor Kralisz, Northwest Dallas

Moyers and McKenzie

Re: “Moyers practiced the journalism of ideas — Listening to others is a lost art, but it’s crucial for a democracy,” by William McKenzie, Monday Opinion.

After decades of loving and hating McKenzie’s columns, this opinion piece on Bill Moyers may be the best I have ever read. Facilitating the exchange of ideas keeps our democracy alive. Such dialogue has never been more urgently needed!

Bill R.
