{"id":401661,"date":"2025-11-24T16:30:24","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T16:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/401661\/"},"modified":"2025-11-24T16:30:24","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T16:30:24","slug":"grocery-store-closes-in-west-dallas-challenging-food-desert-area","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/401661\/","title":{"rendered":"Grocery store closes in West Dallas, challenging \u2018food desert\u2019 area"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">A grocery store in a food desert area of Dallas has closed, a blow for the region that leaves dwindling options for local food shoppers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Cash Saver \u2014 near the corner of Hampton and Singleton \u2014 has \u201cpermanently closed,\u201d though the pharmacy was still available recently, according to signage. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The shuttering in West Dallas comes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/retail\/2019\/12\/18\/west-dallas-shopping-center-gets-a-grocery-store\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/retail\/2019\/12\/18\/west-dallas-shopping-center-gets-a-grocery-store\/\">after opening little more than five years ago<\/a>. Yet the move was \u201csimply a company business decision,\u201d according to Bill Davidson, general manager, in an email responding to questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThis location has always been a very difficult one to achieve the sales and profitability needed to avoid unsustainable losses,\u201d Davidson said. In addition, there were earlier efforts to get help from the city with a grant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Amid the population, retail and economic growth of the broader North Texas region, some parts of the region have faced uneven grocery options, forcing locals to travel to other areas with more choices. That includes Dallas\u2019 Oak Cliff, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/food\/2025\/09\/29\/oak-cliffs-food-desert-grows-smaller-with-urban-farming-education-efforts\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">there have been efforts<\/a> to improve access to healthy food. With the loss of the store on Singleton, West Dallas now has lost a major hub for fresh produce and other food essentials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThe decision to close this store was certainly a difficult one for us,\u201d Davidson said. \u201cIt was a pleasure to serve the very nice and appreciative customers. For local shoppers, one option is Jerry\u2019s Super Market, which is located less than one mile to the east from the site on Singleton, along with some retail spaces that include CVS. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In far north Oak Cliff, which borders West Dallas, a Sprouts Farmers Market opened earlier this year. It\u2019s about a mile from the Cash Saver. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The now former grocery site is part of a larger shopping center that features various retailers, including Boost Mobile, Family Dollar and Pizza Hut. It also sits across the street from a McDonald\u2019s and a business that offers check cashing and money orders. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cGrocery stores in underserved neighborhoods serve as lifelines,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=IOEj6jgAAAAJ&amp;hl=en&amp;oi=ao\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=IOEj6jgAAAAJ&amp;hl=en&amp;oi=ao\">Dohyeong Kim<\/a>, professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, in an email. \u201cIn places like West Dallas, where the Food Saver helped fill a long-standing gap, a store provides far more than a place to shop.
