{"id":402344,"date":"2025-11-24T23:25:17","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T23:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/402344\/"},"modified":"2025-11-24T23:25:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T23:25:17","slug":"mets-brandon-nimmo-trade-fallout-just-getting-started","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/402344\/","title":{"rendered":"Mets&#8217; Brandon Nimmo trade fallout just getting started"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the heels of a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/23\/sports\/mets-trading-brandon-nimmo-to-rangers-for-marcus-semien\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stunning Brandon Nimmo trade that netted Marcus Semien<\/a> and sure looked like the first domino of many, David Stearns said he does not know what the Mets will do next, said \u201canything would be realistic right now\u201d regarding the club\u2019s offseason spending plan and reiterated that he is interested in retaining Pete Alonso and Edwin D\u00edaz.<\/p>\n<p>More concretely, the Mets president of baseball operations offered ways in which Jeff McNeil \u2014 the most affected by the swap \u2014 along with Luisangel Acu\u00f1a, Ronny Mauricio and plenty of the prospects trying to break into the majors still can find their way back to Queens next season with roles on the team.<\/p>\n<p>McNeil has played 584 games at second base since debuting in 2018, and while he has played all over the field, he has been most often seen at the keystone for eight seasons.<\/p>\n<p>If retained, that will change next season because the Mets acquired a Gold Glove second baseman. <\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.50146628;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37756926\" width=\"886\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/mets-side-main-1-rs.jpg\" alt=\"David Stearns is pictured during a Sept. 29 press conference.\" class=\"wp-image-37756926\"  \/>David Stearns is pictured during a Sept. 29 press conference. Robert Sabo for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Stearns talked to McNeil, who still \u201cwants to be a part of this,\u201d Stearns said.<\/p>\n<p>It is of course possible McNeil becomes expendable \u2014 the 33-year-old is owed $15.75 million next season in the final guaranteed year of his contract before a club option for 2027 \u2014 and it is possible McNeil returns and plays wherever there is an opening. <\/p>\n<p>Stearns mentioned second base, first base (with Alonso a free agent) and the corner outfield, with left field now vacant, as possibilities.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Jeff, by virtue of his positional versatility, still has the ability to impact our team in a variety of ways,\u201d Stearns said over Zoom on Monday. \u201cWhat exactly that\u2019s going to look like is probably going to have to wait until we watch the rest of the offseason unfold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same applies for the rest of a suddenly overcrowded infield on the Mets roster. <\/p>\n<p>Brett Baty likely will be moved back to third base. <\/p>\n<p>Acu\u00f1a and Mauricio saw time in the infield last season, but now may not be able to win everyday jobs even with strong camps. <\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37756996\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/mets-side-inset-1.jpg\" alt=\"Jeff McNeil makes a throw during the Mets' Sept. 16 game against the Padres.\" class=\"wp-image-37756996\"  \/>Jeff McNeil makes a throw during the Mets\u2019 Sept. 16 game against the Padres.
