\u201cYou can\u2019t pin this on Aaron Boone, that\u2019s for sure,\u201d Steinbrenner said Monday via Zoom. \u201cThis Toronto series was on the players. It\u2019s on the players\u2019 shoulders, period. They didn\u2019t hit. We had a couple bad starts. Against the Blue Jays, you can\u2019t do any of that when they were playing as good as they were playing.\u201d<\/p>\n
That was just part of Steinbrenner\u2019s defense of Boone, who will return for a ninth season next year. <\/p>\n
The Yankees signed Boone to a two-year extension (through 2027) coming off a World Series appearance last year, but the club still has yet to take the final step under him and add to its 27 championships.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s a good manager at many of the things he has to do,\u201d Steinbrenner said. \u201cHe\u2019s not perfect, I\u2019m not perfect, you\u2019re not perfect. But he is great at dealing with the players, with his staff, with [GM Brian Cashman\u2019s] people and Cash, with you guys [reporters]. He makes overall good decisions on the field.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the biggest criticisms of Boone\u2019s tenure is the summer swoon that many of his teams have gone through. <\/p>\n
Steinbrenner mentioned the frustrating \u201csix-to-seven week period\u201d the Yankees went through this summer where they were making too many mistakes and not playing a good brand of baseball.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Just one of those losses turning into wins would have been enough to lift the Yankees to a division title instead of tying with the Blue Jays and dropping the tiebreaker, which came back to hurt when they faced them in the ALDS. <\/p>\n
But Steinbrenner, when asked about the summer struggles, indicated Boone was not part of the problem.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a difficult question to ask,\u201d Steinbrenner said. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing coaching-wise that I feel we could have done differently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steinbrenner has been a proponent of instituting a salary cap \u2014 as long as it comes with a salary floor \u2014 which he reiterated Monday. <\/p>\n
That topic will be central to the battle over MLB\u2019s next collective bargaining agreement after the current one expires next offseason.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook, there are groups of fans out there, including my hometown in Tampa, that come to spring training games thinking their team has little chance of making the playoffs \u2014 or at least little chance of making it deep in the playoffs,\u201d Steinbrenner said. \u201cThose fans would argue that\u2019s not good for baseball as a whole. It\u2019s a valid argument.
