The production disclosed Monday evening that its final bow at the St. James Theatre is set for Jan. 4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe decision to close continues a trend of new Broadway musicals struggling to catch on with audiences. When the curtain falls on \u201cQueen of Versailles\u201d in January, the production will have run less than two months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe musical, based on Lauren Greenfield\u2019s 2012 documentary of the same name about a couple of Florida fat cats mounting construction on a 90,000 square-foot estate amid the 2008 global economic crisis, was one of the more high-profile new offerings from Broadway this fall. Led by Chenoweth, the show marked a much-hyped reunion between the stage star and composer Stephen Schwartz. Schwartz composed and wrote lyrics for \u201cWicked,\u201d which starred Chenoweth as Glinda in the original Broadway production. F. Murray Abraham co-starred, playing the much-older husband to Chenoweth\u2019s lead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Queen of Versailles\u201d began with a 2024 run at the Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston, proving popular enough to warrant a transfer the following year. The production was directed by Michael Arden, who won a Tony Award for his 2023 revival of \u201cParade\u201d and another in 2024 for helming \u201cMaybe Happy Ending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBroadway previews began on Oct. 8 and the production opened on Nov. 9. Reviews have generally been mixed to negative, with Variety\u2019s Aramide Tinubu <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/legit\/reviews\/the-queen-of-versailles-broadway-review-kristin-chenoweth-1236571652\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writing<\/a> that \u201cwhile the opening act is fairly intriguing, by the second act, the nearly three-hour-long performance began to drag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cFor years, people have asked me, \u2018What\u2019s your dream role?\u2019\u201d Chenoweth <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/legit\/news\/kristin-chenoweth-wicked-composer-stephen-schwartz-queen-of-versailles-broadway-1236537767\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Variety<\/a> in an interview ahead of previews. \u201c\u2018Is it \u201cHello, Dolly!\u201d?
