Bill Maher shared he stopped taking cheap shots at President Donald Trump after they had a heated in-person meeting at the White House earlier this year.<\/p>\n

The comedian opened up about his one-on-one with the president during Monday\u2019s episode of \u201cClub Random With Bill Maher,\u201d where Trump\u2019s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, appeared as a guest.<\/p>\n

As Maher detailed to the Republican National Committee co-chair, he eased off certain digs against the president after the latter exploded at him for making orangutang comparisons.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll tell you this, I\u2019ve never said this publicly, but it\u2019s true,\u201d Maher recalled. \u201cWe went into the little merch room after the Oval Office. And he started yelling at me about the bit I did many years ago about the orangutang.\u201d <\/p>\n

Per Maher, he refused to apologize for the bit, defending \u201cit was a satire in response to [Trump] demanding [Barack] Obama\u2019s birth certificate,\u201d which he said was \u201cwrong and racist and not cool.\u201d <\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cYou know, he absolutely accepted that and then I said \u2026 \u2018But you know what, I will also admit \u2026 have I taken some cheap shots? I have. And that\u2019s not necessary.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Since that meeting, Maher noted there have been \u201cno jokes about his weight, no jokes about his hair, his makeup,\u201d etc. Maher made it clear that digs about First Lady Melania Trump were off the table, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have enough on my plate with the policy,\u201d he explained. \u201cI don\u2019t have to go there. So, I thought like, you know, this is how people bridge. You make a little thing here, I make a little move this way. It doesn\u2019t hurt me, it doesn\u2019t hurt you. And I like it better. I like sticking to this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Maher shared that his writers recently pitched a joke about the president\u2019s hand, but he said that he shut the bit down. \u201cI\u2019m 70. That could be my hand tomorrow,\u201d Maher stated. \u201cSo I\u2019m not making fun of physical deformities and that stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite Maher\u2019s new no \u201ccheap shots\u201d policy, he defended that he still does his job, which includes \u201ccalling [Trump] out.\u201d He shared he\u2019s gotten quite a bit of flak from the left over his visit with Trump, confessing \u201cthe people who hate me for it never let me forget it.\u201d<\/p>\n
