{"id":404211,"date":"2025-11-25T18:59:17","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T18:59:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/404211\/"},"modified":"2025-11-25T18:59:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T18:59:17","slug":"heres-who-has-announced-a-run-to-lead-the-bexar-county-district-attorneys-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/404211\/","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s who has announced a run to lead the Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s Office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>BEXAR COUNTY, Texas<\/strong> \u2013 At least seven individuals thus far have formally announced campaign plans to run for Bexar County\u2019s top prosecutor position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The seat will open following the end of the current DA Joe Gonzales\u2019 tenure, who announced in June 2025 that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/06\/05\/watch-at-415-pm-bexar-county-district-attorneys-office-to-deliver-department-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/06\/05\/watch-at-415-pm-bexar-county-district-attorneys-office-to-deliver-department-update\/\">he would not seek reelection<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In October 2025, two high-profile moves were made in the larger campaign conversation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Ron Rangel, the presiding judge in Bexar County\u2019s 379th Criminal Court, pulled his name from the running, citing \u201cfamily considerations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">And, while not officially filing to run for the seat, State Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer (D-San Antonio) formed an exploratory committee for the spot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The committee, according to a Nov. 10 news release, would be led by legal figures with over 120 years of combined experience: Therese Huntzinger, a former chief prosecutor in the District Attorney\u2019s Juvenile Crimes Division; Bobby Barrera, past president of the San Antonio Bar Association and director for the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association; and Mario Del Prado, former chief prosecutor in the District Attorney\u2019s Major Crimes Division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Here are the seven candidates who have put their names in for the seat so far.<\/p>\n<p><b>Luz Elena Chapa<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Former Fourth Court of Appeals Judge Luz Elena Chapa announced her plans to run for the seat as a Democrat on Tuesday, Nov. 25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Former Texas State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte is serving as her campaign treasurer, according to a news release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Most recently, Chapa served as a visiting judge for the Fourth Administrative Judicial Region. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThis is important and personal to me,\u201d Chapa said. \u201cI live and work here; I\u2019m raising my family here, and I care deeply about public safety and a strong, safe community. I have the experience to get the job done, having been a civil litigator and an appellate judge. <\/p>\n<p><b>Shannon Locke <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Locke, a longtime criminal defense attorney, announced his plans to run for the seat as a Democrat on Thursday, Nov. 20.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThis office belongs to the people, not to politicians,\u201d Locke said in a news release. \u201cIn every courthouse hallway and every neighborhood I walk, I hear the same thing: people want a justice system that is firm, fair, and focused on solving problems, not scoring headlines. That\u2019s the kind of District Attorney I intend to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Ashley Foster <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Foster, who filed as a Republican, made her campaign announcement on a Nov. 8 Facebook post. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI\u2019m running to make our community safer, our system fairer, and our future brighter,\u201d the post stated. \u201cThis campaign is about all of Bexar County \u2014 every neighborhood, every family, every voice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Meli Carri\u00f3n Powers<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Carri\u00f3n Powers, a prosecutor with more than two decades of experience, announced her Democratic candidacy on Oct. 23. She currently serves as the Chief of the Family Violence Division of the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cFor over two decades, I have been standing shoulder-to-shoulder with victims, I have fought for children who have been abused, survivors of domestic violence, and families shattered by violent crime,\u201d she said. \u201cI know exactly what is at stake when we fail to prosecute dangerous offenders effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Veronica Legaretta<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Legaretta, a Democrat who was one of the earliest candidates to file for the race, announced her intent to run on Oct. 17. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She previously served as a prosecutor with the Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s office and as a criminal defense attorney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe have not had a female District Attorney in Bexar County since former D.A. Susan Reed and have never had a female Hispanic District Attorney in Bexar County\u201d, Legarreta stated. \u201cI think it\u2019s about time for fresh eyes and a fresh perspective to solve, strategize, and eliminate the problems and issues that have existed in the Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s office.
