As Americans celebrate freedom this weekend, our greatest city threatens to reject it altogether. With Zohran Mamdani now favored<\/a>\u00a0to be the next mayor of New York, communism has come to the Big Apple.<\/p>\n

And yes, Mamdani is a communist. He may\u00a0fancy himself<\/a> a \u201cdemocratic socialist,\u201d but Mamdani\u2019s policy proposals come straight out of the Eastern Bloc\u2019s collectivist playbook.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t take my word for it.\u00a0Listen to Mamdani, who\u00a0called<\/a>\u00a0for \u201cseizing the means of production.\u201d\u00a0Or\u00a0ask Reps. Laura Gillen and Tom Suozzi, both New York Democrats,\u00a0who\u00a0consider<\/a>\u00a0Mamdani \u201ctoo extreme to lead.\u201d James Carville\u00a0recently warned<\/a>\u00a0that a Mamdani victory would be \u201cpotentially damaging\u201d for Democrats nationwide.<\/p>\n

That much is obvious, or so I thought before Mamdani cruised to his primary victory. Apparently, the truth is not obvious to the\u00a0recent college graduates<\/a>\u00a0who solidify Mamdani\u2019s left-wing base.<\/p>\n

As a Vassar College graduate, I\u2019m not surprised by the communist sympathies that trickle out of academia. What\u2019s surprising is the utter disregard \u2014 willfully or naively \u2014 for blatant flaws in the communist worldview, where Big Government controls our destiny at the expense of a free market that made New York prosperous<\/a>\u00a0and appealing to college graduates in the first place.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s put aside the fact that\u00a0more than 100 million deaths<\/a> are attributed to 20th-century Communist regimes. And let\u2019s accept the left-wing assumption that \u201cit would never happen here\u201d (lest we forget the COVID-era mandates and restrictions now swept under the rug).<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s just talk economics. One Mamdani supporter\u00a0recently explained his support<\/a>, \u201cMoney is always on our mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maybe, buried in the back of it. Political promises like Mamdani\u2019s are double-sided coins \u2014 government giveaways on one side, costs on the other. His proposals would indeed cost an estimated $10 billion<\/a>\u00a0in totality.<\/p>\n

How would New York \u2014 where city debt threatens $100 billion<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 pay for it? A corporate tax rate\u00a0increase to 11.5%<\/a>, a 2% flat tax<\/a>\u00a0on high-earning city residents, and other tax hikes.<\/p>\n

Unaffected Mamdani supporters naturally respond, \u201cGood, the rich should pay their \u2018fair share.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Fact check: New York\u2019s \u201c1%\u201d already accounts for more than half of all income taxes<\/a>\u00a0paid. And New York already\u00a0leads the country<\/a>\u00a0in state and local taxes collected per person.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s another problem. The pool of individuals and households earning more than $1 million, for example, is smaller than Mamdani thinks<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and it could get even smaller. The heavier the tax burden gets, the more the tax base erodes, and the less money becomes available for pricey programs. To quote Margaret Thatcher, \u201cThe problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people\u2019s money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Writing from Miami, I\u2019m not just speculating. The COVID-19 pandemic was New York\u2019s case study in mass exodus, with one million more people<\/a>\u00a0leaving the city than moving to it.<\/p>\n

The primary beneficiaries? Lower-tax alternatives like Florida, which is the country\u2019s\u00a0fastest growing state<\/a>. People vote with their feet.<\/p>\n

Again, don\u2019t just take my word for it. Ask New York\u2019s governor, Democrat Kathy Hochul, who recently admitted<\/a>, \u201cI don\u2019t want to lose any more people to Palm Beach. We\u2019ve lost enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

For now, Florida will keep winning. Part of the reason is Florida\u2019s strong community of Cuban and Venezuelan immigrants, who don\u2019t need a history lesson about communism; they lived it. They suffered through it, after hearing empty promises similar to Mamdani\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Ignorant New Yorkers would benefit from visiting Little Havana for a better understanding of American values \u2014 patriotism and a deep sense of gratitude to live here. As an immigrant from the once-Communist Balkans, I sympathize, seeing how my parents left their homeland to live an American Dream that doesn\u2019t exist anywhere else.<\/p>\n

The ignorant need cultural immersion at the\u00a0American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora<\/a>, which tells the story of those who fled the Cuban island that went from a free, prosperous republic to an oppressive, impoverished dictatorship within a single generation.<\/p>\n

On the eve of Fidel Castro\u2019s 1959 revolution, Cuba\u00a0ranked fifth<\/a> in the Western Hemisphere (the U.S. and Canada included) in terms of per-capita income. The museum, also called The Cuban, located in the heart of Miami, shows the prison cells and execution walls where communism\u2019s empty promises led the island. How quickly we forget \u2014 or, in Mamdani\u2019s case, never learn in the first place.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s celebrate the parts of America where freedom is still cherished. And let\u2019s hope our greatest city reclaims its former glory one day soon.<\/p>\n
