GENIUS Act leaves USDT with 3 doors AND a ticking clock"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>The GENIUS Act forces Tether to comply, exit the U.S., or launch a new stablecoin.<\/li>\n<li>USDC may benefit, but market dominance won\u2019t shift overnight, despite Circle\u2019s regulatory advantage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>U.S. lawmakers are drawing a hard line as far as the GENIUS Act goes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/category\/stablecoins\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tether [USDT]<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest and most controversial stablecoin issuer, now faces a big choice: comply with rigorous new standards, launch a fully transparent alternative, or exit the U.S. market altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Given an 18-36 month window to meet the requirements or face a potential ban, the next chapter in Tether\u2019s high-stakes story could redefine the stablecoin landscape as we know it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is the GENIUS Act finally cornering Tether?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"99\" data-end=\"579\">With the <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/senate-approves-genius-act-will-stablecoins-reach-3-7t-by-2030\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GENIUS Act<\/a> moving closer to becoming law, the world\u2019s most widely used stablecoin is staring down a U.S. compliance clock it may not be able to beat.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"99\" data-end=\"579\">Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed didn\u2019t sugarcoat the target. During <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reed.senate.gov\/news\/speeches\/reed-statement-on-the-so-called-genius-act-s1582\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">remarks<\/a> in support of the bill, he named Tether directly and added,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"947\" data-end=\"1263\">\u201cThis stablecoin is called \u2018Tether,\u2019 and it is the biggest beneficiary of this bill\u2026 Tether has never undergone an audit and this bill would not require one.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"947\" data-end=\"1263\">He added,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"947\" data-end=\"1263\">\u201cNorth Korea, Russian arms dealers, human traffickers, terrorists, and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"99\" data-end=\"579\">For context, the bill demands full audits, transparent reserves, capital cushions, and strict oversight. In 2021, it settled with the New York Attorney General. <\/p>\n<p>The case involved claims that USDT was not fully backed. Tether paid an $18.5 million fine and was banned from operating in New York. Since then, it has released quarterly attestations of its reserves. <\/p>\n<p>However, Tether has never completed a full, independent audit. This remains a major red flag. The GENIUS Act now brings that issue back into the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1265\" data-end=\"1359\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The question now isn\u2019t whether the U.S. wants transparency \u2013 it\u2019s whether Tether can survive it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three doors and a ticking clock<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"96\" data-end=\"497\">The GENIUS Act leaves Tether with three options.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"96\" data-end=\"497\">First, comply: embrace full audits, implement strict AML\/KYC programs, and build the tech to freeze tokens on command.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"96\" data-end=\"497\">Second, exit the U.S. entirely \u2013 a playbook it followed in Europe after MiCA forced strict licensing and transparency. But walking away from America\u2019s deep liquidity and institutional capital comes at a steep cost.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"499\" data-end=\"719\">The third option? Launch a compliant, U.S.-only stablecoin. CEO Paolo Ardoino hinted at this earlier, stating the new product would be \u201ctailored to domestic needs,\u201d unlike USDT, which serves global underbanked markets.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"926\">Still, even this route has risks \u2013 it fractures the brand, invites scrutiny, and doesn\u2019t guarantee legislative goodwill.
