\n\tDancing With the Stars has crowned a 34th winner<\/a>!<\/p>\n

\n\tTuesday night\u2019s finale was a star-studded affair, as the full cast<\/a> returned to cheer on the top five finalists of Alix Earle, Dylan Efron, Elaine Hendrix, Jordan Chiles and Robert Irwin. For the first time in the show\u2019s history, the remaining couples performed three separate new dances, including the judges\u2019 choice, instant dance challenge and freestyle rounds.<\/p>\n

\n\tEliminated cast members Secret Lives of Mormon Wives<\/a> stars Jen Affleck and Whitney Leavitt, author-influencer (and wife to Alec Baldwin) Hilaria Baldwin, retired NBA star Baron Davis, actor-musician Corey Feldman, Boy Meets World star Danielle Fishel, Pentatonix\u2019s Scott Hoying, Fifth Harmony member Lauren Jauregui and comedian-actor Andy Richter all returned for the final episode of the season. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Hollywood Reporter was inside the ballroom for finale night, where the five remaining duos were kept busying engaging in three rounds of competition. The first dance, which tasked the pairs to perform to a song chosen by one of the three judges, was great, but it was the instant dance challenge that felt the most electrifying. <\/p>\n

\n\tYes: the couples actually learned which style and song they were dancing to mere minutes before they hit the stage. And while it was a daunting task, each of the celebrities performed exceptionally well, leading the night into the beloved freestyle round of competition. <\/p>\n

\n\tAll five couples received perfect scores for their freestyle numbers, and each of the routines were perfectly unique to each celebrity. Jordan\u2019s number featured quite the cameo as Fifth Harmony\u2019s Normani hit the stage with the Olympian as she performed to her track \u201cMotivation,\u201d putting a powerful cap on season 34 of DWTS.<\/p>\n

\n\tThough ultimately it was Robert and Witney Carson who took home the mirrorball trophy, leaving a long-lasting legacy on the competitive ballroom dance series that his elder sister, Bindi Irwin, started a decade ago when she also won the show. It was a moment that was years in the making, one that Witney previously told The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> \u201cwould just mean everything to me.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tTo celebrate the success of season 34, THR spoke with DWTS showrunner<\/a> Conrad Green<\/a> and casting director Deena Katz<\/a>, where they dished on the secrets behind the series\u2019 newfound virality. With a boost from social media and a savvy casting strategy, DWTS reached new heights this season and became a ratings dream<\/a> for a veteran series.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tKatz explained that \u201cwhat has happened is the TikTok world has opened something up that I\u2019ve never seen before, where we are so involved in the TikTok story every single week that there\u2019s a whole new audience that needed to start watching our show to keep up with what was going on in social media.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd Green also dished on the real weight of viewers votes versus judges score (\u201cIt\u2019s 50\/50, effectively\u201d), which is how eliminations are ultimately decided on the show.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen you see the judges\u2019 leaderboards, say there\u2019s five couples and you\u2019re in first place on that leaderboard, you get five judges ranking points. If you\u2019re in second place, you get four, if you\u2019re in third place, you get three, [so on and so forth],\u201d he explained. \u201cWe do the same with the amount of public votes. You add those two [separate] ranking points together, and the couple with the lowest combined total of those ranking points goes home. And if there\u2019s a tie on those ranking points, the couple with the fewest public votes goes home.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe couple with the lowest combined total of judges\u2019 scores and viewer votes is eliminated at the end of each episode. Live voting takes place during the East Coast airing of each show and ends shortly after the final performance is completed.<\/p>\n
