The temperature reached a high of 94 degrees \u2014 surpassing the previous high for July 5 \u2014 at 4 p.m., but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/8m2_t3UCKjo0Y7OXJ2fHsXRFUUzKaJNlxUbzZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4ghFjMvLYleJZL2Kk8AixEdPYNcyQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/8m2_t3UCKjo0Y7OXJ2fHsXRFUUzKaJNlxUbzZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4ghFjMvLYleJZL2Kk8AixEdPYNcyQ&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1751684306979000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1YHE-lC2L519MlhLiORsQM\">dropped to a chilly 64 degrees<\/a>\u00a0when a cold front swept in around 11 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Winds reached 82 mph and left 100,000 homes in the area without power. The most violent wind report came from Northbrook, where half of a roof on a 20-car garage was lifted and then dropped, damaging at least seven cars in a parking shelter for a condominium. (Robert Abbott Sengstacke\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2019:<\/strong> The Chicago Defender announced it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/07\/05\/chicago-defender-influential-african-american-newspaper-ceasing-print-publication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ceasing print publication<\/a> and switching to a digital-only format. It still exists at <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/chicagodefender.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:chicagodefender.com;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"47\" data-v9y=\"1\">chicagodefender.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper was founded in 1905 by <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/07\/25\/as-first-victim-of-chicagos-1919-race-riots-finally-receives-a-grave-marker-heres-a-look-at-other-notable-people-buried-in-lincoln-cemetery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Robert Sengstacke Abbott;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"41\" data-v9y=\"1\">Robert Sengstacke Abbott,<\/a> who called it <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/blog-post\/remembering-chicago-defender-print-edition-1905-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201cThe World\u2019s Greatest Weekly,\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"42\" data-v9y=\"1\">\u201cThe World\u2019s Greatest Weekly.\u201d<\/a> He encouraged Black Americans born and raised in the South \u2014 like himself \u2014 to move north during the <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/dataviz\/visualizations\/020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Great Migration;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"43\" data-v9y=\"1\">Great Migration<\/a>\u00a0of the 20th century.
