Rumour has it that Bungie has started preliminary work on Destiny 3<\/a>, which if true would comfortably become one of Sony\u2019s biggest releases for the PS6.<\/p>\n

The speculation comes courtesy of Colony Deaks<\/a>, a known Destiny leaker and dataminer who\u2019s revealed accurate information in the past.<\/p>\n

Writing on X<\/a> (or Twitter<\/a>), the snoop claims they\u2019ve been aware of the sequel\u2019s status for some weeks, but underlined that the project is in an \u201cearly state\u201d. The account adds that it intends to share more in the coming months.<\/p>\n

Yes, Destiny 3 is in extremely early development. Some of you may have seen a tweet early this afternoon that mentioned that.<\/p>\n

Destiny 2<\/a> has been in a tough spot of late, with its player count dwindling<\/a> following The Final Shape<\/a>, which concluded the sequel\u2019s saga in 2024.<\/p>\n

The company has since tried to keep the shooter relevant with new add-ons, and it\u2019ll be hoping next month\u2019s Star Wars-inspired Renegade<\/a> brings players back in a big way.<\/p>\n

But owner Sony has been very disappointed with the dev\u2019s performance, writing down a $200 million \u201cimpairment loss\u201d recently<\/a> due to the lack of overall engagement with Destiny 2.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t help that Bungie also delayed extraction shooter Marathon<\/a>, which is currently going through another round of testing<\/a> ahead of its expected release next year. There\u2019ll be a lot of pressure on that game to perform.<\/p>\n

All that said, Destiny 3 would represent an opportunity for the dev to start over and onboard new players again, with its current game notoriously impenetrable to anyone but the most engaged fans.<\/p>\n

However, if progress is \u201cextremely early\u201d, like the leaker states, we wouldn\u2019t expect the sequel to be ready for at least another four or five years, which means we may not be playing it until 2030 or so.<\/p>\n

That would put it comfortably in the PS6 era, and would make it one of the biggest Sony releases of the generation. But it\u2019s hard to get too excited with the purported project potentially so many years away.<\/p>\n
