Now scientists have found a new way to clear these harmful clumps in the brains of mice and the eyes of fruit flies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This potentially promising <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IaO\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Alzheimer&#039;s;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> treatment involves an oral dose of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arginine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:arginine;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">arginine<\/a>, an amino acid already used as a medication for conditions including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cardiac-arrest-and-heart-attacks-arent-the-same-heres-how-to-tell-them-apart\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:chest pain;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">chest pain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-blood-pressure-guidelines-mean-you-may-now-have-hypertension\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:high blood pressure;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">high blood pressure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The discovery was made by a team from Kindai University and Japan&#8217;s National Institute of Neuroscience, who focused on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/one-biggest-hopes-alzheimers-treatment-210004754.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:amyloid-beta plaques;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amyloid-beta plaques<\/a> seen in Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">If the same results can be achieved in human brains, we may have another avenue for potentially tackling a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/simple-compound-reverses-alzheimers-symptoms-020128946.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:key molecular symptom;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">key molecular symptom<\/a> of Alzheimer&#8217;s \u2013 in a safe and easily applied way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/may-now-know-why-alzheimers-022213508.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:We May Now Know Why Alzheimer&#039;s Erases Memories of Our Loved Ones;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We May Now Know Why Alzheimer&#8217;s Erases Memories of Our Loved Ones<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Our study demonstrates that arginine can suppress amyloid-beta aggregation both in vitro and in vivo,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1106825\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:says;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">says<\/a> neuroscientist Yoshitaka Nagai, from Kindai University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;What makes this finding exciting is that arginine is already known to be clinically safe and inexpensive, making it a highly promising candidate for repositioning as a therapeutic option for Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Fly model diagram\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"642\" height=\"510\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4ea86ba41aa900b0b78ba816ef39bc70.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Arginine reduced amyloid-beta clumping (in green) in fruit fly models. Int., 2025)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The researchers bred male mice with Alzheimer&#8217;s-like aggregations of amyloid-beta, then added arginine to the animals&#8217; drinking water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Arginine significantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/simple-compound-reverses-alzheimers-symptoms-020128946.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:reduced the protein build-up;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduced the protein build-up<\/a> in the animals&#8217; brains and alleviated some of the related toxic effects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mice given arginine also showed reduced behavioral abnormalities during tests and had less active neuroinflammatory genes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">So the treatment may not be just scrubbing away the protein plaques; it could be reversing some of the harm being done to the brain, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Further experiments in fruit flies and test tubes added to the evidence that arginine could possibly clear out amyloid-beta clumps and stop them from forming in the first place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Scientists already knew that arginine can act as a kind of chemical chaperone, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/brain\/awaa115\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:preventing the abnormal misfolding;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">preventing the abnormal misfolding<\/a> and clumping of proteins, like those seen in Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. The <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/animal-testing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:animal testing;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">animal testing<\/a> has produced encouraging results, and clinical trials can now be considered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Finally, there <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/one-biggest-hopes-alzheimers-treatment-210004754.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:remains some uncertainty;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remains some uncertainty<\/a> that clearing away amyloid-beta plaques can actually work as a way of treating Alzheimer&#8217;s.
