He is expected to appeal the decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not justice, it is revenge,\u201d Vizcarra said on social media. \u201cBut they will not break me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vizcarra alleged his sentence was retribution for \u201cstanding up\u201d to the right-wing political groups that control Congress, among which the influence of the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fujimori-peru-lima-died-777fdfcb09eafd731a7412c8bf1a2f64\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">late former President Alberto Fujimori<\/a> is particularly prominent. Vizcarra clashed with these groups when he led the South American country between 2018 and 2020 and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-82d3dd0d76054d5ba6744825c448d973\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eventually dissolved Congress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The criminal court in the capital, Lima, concluded that Vizcarra received illegal payments from companies in exchange for awarding them contracts for two major projects \u2014 an irrigation system and the construction of a hospital \u2014 during his time as governor of Moquegua.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities accused Vizcarra of receiving approximately $611,000 in bribes from construction companies.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors had requested a 15-year prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p>The former president\u2019s brother, Mario Vizcarra, is seeking Peru\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Former Peruvian Presidents Alejandro Toledo, Ollanta Humala and Pedro Castillo are also in prison. Fujimori was imprisoned for more than 15 years.
