{"id":40756,"date":"2025-07-05T12:33:17","date_gmt":"2025-07-05T12:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/40756\/"},"modified":"2025-07-05T12:33:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-05T12:33:17","slug":"wimbledon-siegemund-beats-australian-open-champ-keys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/40756\/","title":{"rendered":"Wimbledon: Siegemund beats Australian Open champ Keys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON (AP) \u2014 This most unpredictable of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/wimbledon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wimbledons<\/a> delivered yet another surprise Friday when reigning Australian Open champion <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/madison-keys-australian-open-sabalenka-10036b4e45f02363ec3e3fcb12afb56a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madison Keys<\/a>, the No. 6 seed, was a lopsided loser in the third round, eliminated 6-3, 6-3 by 104th-ranked Laura Siegemund of Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Keys\u2019 exit left just one of the top six women in the bracket before the end of Week 1: No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who stuck around by claiming the last five games and defeating 2021 U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu of Britain 7-6 (6), 6-4 at a boisterous Centre Court at night.<\/p>\n<p>No. 2 Coco Gauff, No. 3 Jessica Pegula, No. 4 Jasmine Paolini and No. 5 Zheng Qinwen already were out. The men\u2019s field also has seen its share of surprises, including a Wimbledon-record 13 seeds gone in the first round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt times, it wasn\u2019t the best quality, let\u2019s say. But I managed, and in the end, it\u2019s just important to find solutions and I did that well. Kept my nerves in the end,\u201d Siegemund said, then added with a laugh: \u201cThere are always nerves. (AP Photo\/Alastair Grant)<\/p>\n<p>Read More<\/p>\n<p>Wimbledon might be the only Grand Slam event where Keys hasn\u2019t reached at least the semifinals, but she has participated in the quarterfinals there twice and is <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/madison-keys-aryna-sabalenka-australian-open-women-final-9d1201db1b56ad6229a63b89796d7e89\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enjoying a breakthrough 2025<\/a>, including her title at Melbourne Park in January.<\/p>\n<p>Keys\u2019 power vs. Siegemund\u2019s spins and slices offered quite a contrast in styles, and this outcome was surprisingly one-way traffic on a windy afternoon at No. 2 Court. The key statistic, undoubtedly, was this: Keys made 31 unforced errors, 20 more than Siegemund.<\/p>\n<p>When it ended with one last backhand return from Keys that sailed wide, Siegemund smiled broadly, raised her arms and jumped up and down repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t not be happy when you beat a great player like Madison,\u201d Siegemund said.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-open-live-updates-august-28-59d86b4d4703340335542eb26c49107c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How unexpected is this for Siegemund<\/a>? Before this year, her career record at the All England Club was 2-5, and she\u2019d never made it past the second round. Taking into account all four Grand Slam tournaments, she had reached the third round only once in 28 previous appearances, getting to the quarterfinals at the 2020 French Open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is technically no pressure for me,\u201d said Siegemund, at 37 the oldest woman remaining in the tournament. \u201cI try to remember that I only play for myself. I don\u2019t feel like I need to prove anything anymore.
