{"id":407601,"date":"2025-11-27T05:03:35","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T05:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/407601\/"},"modified":"2025-11-27T05:03:35","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T05:03:35","slug":"manhattan-dem-julie-menin-likely-to-be-next-nyc-council-speaker-setting-up-possible-clash-with-zohran-mamdani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/407601\/","title":{"rendered":"Manhattan Dem Julie Menin likely to be next NYC Council speaker\u2014setting up possible clash with Zohran Mamdani"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Zoh could have a new foe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/06\/opinion\/new-york-city-urgently-needs-a-sane-city-council-speaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Councilwoman Julie Menin<\/a>\u00a0revealed Wednesday that she locked up \u201csuper majority\u201d support to become the City Council\u2019s next speaker \u2013 putting her on a potential collision course with incoming Mayor Zohran Mamdani.<\/p>\n<p>The 58-year-old Manhattan Democrat positioned herself as a moderate compared to the socialist Mamdani\u2019s simpatico ally Crystal Hudson (D-Brooklyn), the other front-runner in the pitched backroom battle for the council\u2019s leadership role.<\/p>\n<p>Sources said several members of Mamdani\u2019s camp had scrambled to push city lawmakers to vote for Hudson and against Menin, but face-planted.<\/p>\n<p>Councilwoman Julie Menin is expected to become the City Council\u2019s next speaker. LP Media<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople on his team certainly seemed to want Crystal [Hudson] but I\u2019m not sure he ever did,\u201d one source said of Mamdani.<\/p>\n<p>Menin will be the first Jewish speaker if her support holds when council members cast their actual votes in January at the start of the legislative body\u2019s new term.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She proudly declared support from a diverse slate of 36 lawmakers, from progressive Yusuf Salaam (D-Bronx) to Republican council members \u2013 and broadly signaled she\u2019d work with Mamdani on his affordability cause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this broad five-borough coalition, we stand ready to partner with Mayor-elect Mamdani\u2019s administration and deliver on a shared agenda that makes New York more affordable through universal child care, lowers rent and health care costs, and ensures that families across the City can do more than just get by,\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Menin is widely considered to be a moderating force on Zohran Mamdani\u2019s agenda. AP<\/p>\n<p>Hudson admitted defeat as the tally became clear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always said this should be a member driven process; and today, my colleagues have made their choice clear,\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The race to become the City Council\u2019s next speaker became a high-stakes contest between whether the legislative body would smooth the way for or provide a check against Mamdani\u2019s progressive agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Menin is seen as a moderate compared to Mamdani ally Crystal Hudson. LP Media<\/p>\n<p>Progressive caucus member Hudson clearly was more aligned with Mamdani\u2019s vision, making her his camp\u2019s preferred candidate \u2013 while Menin was widely seen as a likely moderating force.<\/p>\n<p>Menin joined an exodus from the progressive caucus in 2023 amid a blowup over their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/02\/03\/nyc-democrats-at-war-over-virtue-test-mission-to-defund-nypd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">support for defunding the police<\/a><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She has expressed skepticism over Mamdani\u2019s \u201cDepartment of Community Safety\u201d proposal, although appears supportive of his call for universal childcare, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani\u2019s camp has been pushing lawmakers to vote for Hudson. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>The doubts over Menin\u2019s support for Mamdani\u2019s progressive ideals led to a behind-the-scenes pressure campaign from his camp, with Councilman Lincoln Restler (D-Brooklyn), city Comptroller Brad Lander and adviser Patrick Gaspard pushing lawmakers to back Hudson.<\/p>\n<p>Gaspard, a veteran of former Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s administration and a former ambassador under former President Barack Obama, drew fire from many insiders for his missteps \u2013 particularly pushing the 1199SEIU union to back Hudson when the writing was already on the wall against her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow in good conscience do you ask an active union to endorse a candidate for speaker when the opponent has written support from a super majority of voting members?\u201d one longtime political operative said. \u201cNot a pro move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn relation to Ambassador Gaspard\u2019s role in the speaker\u2019s race I would say his diplomatic and negotiating prowess skills are a little rusty,\u201d a former union adviser said. \u201cToo little, too late comes to mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The effort against Menin, however, appeared far less heavy-handed than Eric Adams\u2019 push as mayor-elect in 2021 to put his ally Francisco Moya in the speaker role.<\/p>\n<p>Adams\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/12\/17\/councilwoman-adrienne-adams-to-be-next-nyc-council-speaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unsuccessful attempt<\/a>\u00a0to put his thumb on the scale is widely considered to have led to the bad blood between him, current Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and the body.<\/p>\n<p>Insiders said Menin\u2019s support is likely to hold come January, barring a scandal or extraordinary renewed pressure campaign from the left.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat said, a month is a long time to hold a group of electeds to a promise,\u201d a source said.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Cunningham, a veteran Democratic operative, called Menin a serious student of government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe she will serve the Council effectively and make sure their views and interests get a fair hearing from the new administration,\u201d he said. \u201cShe will not be a pushover when it comes to negotiating budgets, or other big ticket items.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mayor-elect spoke with Councilmember Menin today and looks forward to working with her and the entire City Council to deliver on our affordability agenda for New Yorkers,\u201d Mamdani Transition Spokesperson Dora Pekec said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Additional reporting by Haley Brown and Hannah Fierick<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Zoh could have a new foe.
