In his acclaimed one-man show, actor and playwright Ari\u2019el Stachel exposes an unexpected vulnerability with his anxiety-riddled quest to belong as an Arab Jew living with obsessive-compulsive disorder.<\/p>\n

The Tony-winning \u201cThe Band\u2019s Visit\u201d<\/a> star takes on myriad characters (and voices) to illustrate his coming-of-age journey and all of its sweat-drenched highs and lows.<\/p>\n

\u201cOther,\u201d a 90-minute production directed by Tony Taccone<\/a>, marks LaChanze<\/a>\u2018s first foray as a lead producer. The Emmy and Tony<\/a>-winning actress, singer and director has co-produced Broadway hits<\/a> such as \u201cBuena Vista Social Club,\u201d \u201cPurpose,\u201d \u201cThe Outsiders\u201d and \u201cKimberly Akimbo,\u201d but Stachel\u2019s powerful story was the perfect opportunity for her to take the reins.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt that this project had the ability to create a conversation that would take the shame out of mental health\u2026 and his story is so universal,\u201d she told the Daily News. \u201cYes, it is set on a young Israeli man, but it really is a play that everyone can see themselves in, whether you \u2026 align with his ability to feel like he\u2019s othered, where he has so many different parts of himself that make up who he is, or if you go into the sadness of the fact that this young man had to hide who he was most of his life and took on other personas: He was white, he was Black, he was Middle Eastern, he was everything except who he was in terms of his lineage and his ethnicity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The story also \u201cspeaks to the moment and it speaks to the time,\u201d\u00a0which makes it relatable, LaChanze said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the other part of it that I love: It\u2019s so timely. I mean, he talks about anxiety. I don\u2019t know anyone who\u2019s not anxious these days\u2026 So I\u2019m hoping people will walk away remembering what this is, feeling a little bit more confident and having empathy for those around them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grammy Award-winning \u201cAmerican Boy\u201d chanteuse Estelle and \u201cGet Right Back to My Baby\u201d singer Vivian Green also plan to bring the crowd to their feet with a walk down memory lane.<\/p>\n

Award-winning dancers Dwight Rhoden<\/a> and Desmond Richardson<\/a>\u2018s lauded dance company has returned for its annual two-week engagement \u2014 with three world premieres.<\/p>\n

New works included in the program are Rhoden\u2019s \u201cImagine Joy\u201d set to Samuel Barber\u2019s \u201cAdagio for Strings,\u201d and \u201cYoung Lovers\u201d by choreographer Houston Thomas, using the music of Jeff Buckley, Tarika Blue and MAW India as his soundtrack.<\/p>\n

Complexions\u2019 Co-Associate Artistic Director Joe Gonz\u00e1lez has also created \u201cI Got U,\u201d described in the program notes<\/a> as \u201can emotional movement to remember the importance of community, connection and having someone to lean on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rounding out the engagement is Rhoden\u2019s \u201cLove Rocks\u201d from 2020, set to the music of Lenny Kravitz<\/a>, along with other selections from Complexions\u2019 iconic repertory.<\/p>\n

Directed and co-written by Alesia \u201cZ\u201d Glidewell, the Roc Nation-produced film stars Rayven Ferrell in the titular role, alongside Bentley Green, Kevin Jackson, Iyana Halley, Richard T. Jones and Richard Lawson as Rev. Al Sharpton<\/a>.<\/p>\n
