Our food scene is resplendent, continually growing, while maintaining a mix of culinary diversity that continues to captivate us.<\/p>\n<p>Below are the things our food editor, Lauren Drewes Daniels, is most thankful for this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Owners Like Cafe Madrid\u2019s Donica Jimenez<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re constantly writing about the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasobserver.com\/food-drink\/most-anticipated-dallas-restaurants-opening-fall-2025-23282385\/\">next big import to hit Dallas<\/a>; restaurants and bars from New York City, LA and beyond love Big D diners and drinkers (and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasobserver.com\/food-drink\/dallas-among-the-top-vacation-destination-for-the-ultra-rich-40609028\/\">deep pockets<\/a>). But then there are the rest: the local people trying to make it in a very complicated industry. It\u2019s not easy. Donica Jimenez has owned Cafe Madrid for 40 years, and real estate giants are <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasobserver.com\/food-drink\/dallas-gem-cafe-madrid-isnt-for-sale-despite-big-offers-40609754\/\">hangry for her small plot in the Knox-Henderson <\/a>neighborhood, but she refuses to sell out. It\u2019s beautiful. Small business owners are the soul of the Dallas food scene. Have a local spot you love? Cool, go visit them this weekend. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re thankful for you. We\u2019re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to this community. <br \/>Help us continue giving back to Dallas.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cafe Momentum Spreading Its Wings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year the James Beard Foundation celebrated Chad Houser of Cafe Momentum with a Humanitarian of the Year Award. Houser started <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasobserver.com\/food-drink\/cafe-momentum-in-dallas-is-a-big-winner-at-james-beard-awards-22514014\/\">Cafe Momentum <\/a>a decade ago as a way to mentor local youths involved in the juvenile justice system. It\u2019s a complicated and difficult task, but he\u2019s cracked some code and is growing the program to other cities. Please go visit Cafe Momentum soon. It\u2019s actually an amazing restaurant too. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Keith Lee Doing Good <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Food influencers are a whole scene. However, Keith Lee occupies a space between influencing and using his powers for good. The former mixed-martial arts fighter casually started posting videos of cooking for his family years ago and now he has a bazillion followers. Earlier this year, he moved to North Texas, and that\u2019s a good thing for local businesses. He recently made his way up to Denton to try the matcha at The Brown Thumb, a struggling cafe that also dabbles in house plants. Lee loved the matcha (it\u2019s ceremonial grade) and left a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasobserver.com\/food-drink\/keith-lees-4000-tip-sparks-1000-boom-for-denton-matcha-shop-40618126\/\">$4,000 pay-it-forward tip<\/a>, a savvy marketing play that sent hundreds to the shop. The Brown Thumb is now on blossoming from the Keith Lee Effect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rising National Acclaim and Culinary Diversity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Michelin Guide has had a clear effect on the local dining scene. Big-name chefs and restaurants are opening shop here, and we\u2019re all fatter for it. But then we also continue to see diversity in our dining scene. Earlier this year we reported on the burgeoning<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasobserver.com\/food-drink\/richardsons-arabian-village-is-a-culinary-wonderland-22355827\/\"> Yemeni cafe scene in Richardson<\/a>. We\u2019ve got <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasobserver.com\/food-drink\/dallas-shop-wins-big-at-new-york-bagelfest-40618033\/\">award-winning bagels<\/a>, lauded <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/guide.michelin.com\/us\/en\/texas\/dallas_2954570\/restaurant\/tatsu-dallas\">Japanese spots<\/a>, plus low-key staples (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasobserver.com\/location\/mr-max-6451849\/?orig=Top100Restaurants\">Mr. Max<\/a>). We haven\u2019t even mentioned Tex-Mex or barbecue. We\u2019ve got it all, and the confluence of these two things \u2014\u00a0national acclaim and diversity \u2014 make Dallas a fun place to eat and live.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Booze at Shopping Malls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This took a turn, huh? But did you know that you can buy a bottle of Champagne at Neiman Marcus? Why are we not doing this more?
